Why does Game Freak have such a hard-on for us being new to the region in every game since Gen 6? Only in Galar were we from the actual region. In XY, SM and SV we're new to the region. Thats nearly 12 years of the same exposition. The only time it makes sense in in Legends Arceus.

Idk but imo it makes the new friends we make feel shallow. In real life people would be hesitant to talk to you since you're new. You'd make the first step to talk to them irl, not the other way round. They must be government mandated friends lol

Ohmori's obsession about friend groups will never gel with me. That's one thing that I think SwSh did well, it avoided that. But then it had the sports theme so it was still kinda gimmicky.

I think thats part of why a lot of people liked PLA. The focus was adventure and there was no retarded friend group for the 500th time. Other than Akari

I think it's because they don't want the kids playing to feel alone. Notice how internally they said PLA was intended for core, young adult gamers and it's the first game in a while focussed purely on adventures with just one rival. I imagine that's not a coincidence. Looks like we'll have to look to the Legends series for more adventure-y vibes

That was a one off though and made sense considering the exposition and fact that Gen 3 was kinda a soft reboot, going from Tajiri to Masuda as the director.

There doesn't need to be a reason though. In Sinnoh the main protagonist already knows Barry and everyone understood the dynamic pretty fast. Same for in BW, you already know Cheren and Bianca, not to mention that didn't stop them from overly tutorializing gameplay anyway. In RBY it's even more simple, you're 10 so you can finally get your Pokemon! You already knew your rival, and everyone else is essentially irrelevant.

You can easily explain stuff to the player without you needing to be new to the setting in game, that's just overly restrictive to the narrative and setting of the game imo. You can introduce a wide and rich cast of characters without needing the exposition of you not already knowing them

Exposition is easier to justify when the protagonist is a newbie. When something is explained to a character, it's also explained to the audience.

Even in stories where the protagonist isn't a newbie, there'll be another character who is/or and is somewhat dumb and needs things explained to them. Basically, these characters exist to make exposition feel more natural since things aren't just being explained to the audience, but to a character in-universe

The solution is to have faith in the reader/player to be able to intuit the setting's various elements just by showing it to them, but Gamefreak thinks you (yes you, personally) are extremely stupid.

Tajiri fizzled out halfway through Gen I. His version of Gold and Silver was a mess and Masuda became the director in early 1998 when he switched over to the team. In the final credits, Tajiri is listed as Director and Masuda as Sub-Director, but I think Masuda would be better credited as a co-director. And after that Tajiri just dipped. Masuda directed Crystal, RS, FRLG, DP, BW, XY, and LGPE.

Look at Tajiri. A Game Boy game shouldn't take nearly 6 years to complete. A Game Boy sequel shouldn't take over 3 years based in the same engine. He wasn't cut out for game development even if he had good ideas.

I get what you mean. Realistically a kid moving from Japan to France wouldn't suddenly get a huge group of people beating down his door to be his friend like in XY. It's unrealistic. I think they just like to write lazily since they're under pressure. That or you are forced to be friends with someone when you go on a Pokémon journey in game, but that's a headcanon

how much exposition is really needed in a Pokemon game though, that couldn't be justified simply by the player being a 10 year old kid who probably doesn't have much life experience? I mean, how many 10 year old kids have travelled around their country or know the deep history of where they live etc? probably not many, let's be real. I think just being a kid out in the world on your own for the first time is more than enough to achieve the 'fish out of water' feeling.

The one question it does answer is why your player character seemingly knows nothing about the world they are about to explore. But you can just ignore that if you want to, or even make it a story point that you have an acquaintance/family friend somewhere else in the region that would be new to the player anyway.

I've always assumed friend groups were just as much about keeping kids attention with constant activity as about the story and relationships. We laugh at people for it but the earlier games being so episodic can be a turn off for those trying the games that aren't instantly sold on the gameplay and concept. The Ohmori games just do the opposite poorly. (Pic related of pulling the latter in a non-Pokemon context, game opens with an actual hour of character introductions with two short battles throughout, and I never went back)

Appreciate your effort post. Valid points made. I do think a lot of what they do is put of fear that children will lose attention. Hence why PLA doesn't do this as much (has the dialogue problem though) since it's supposed to be targeted at core gamers, as that internal presentation leak indicated.

Chrono Trigger doesn't need that shit, the Millennial Fair is a fairly quick opening set-piece that gets a lot done with not too much text and allows the player to experience it at their own pace. As an example, SM and SS have a perfect set-up for their own opening set-pieces being based around a coming of age ceremony for the trials or the start of a new League season. These sorts of things could also help flesh out the lore of the region, as those concepts already do for Alola and Galar.
