Honestly, you *could* remove butterfree and Greninja from the list because they have free promo versions.

I’m definitely done with pika packs. I hate that I had to go as deep as I did with the ftp currency, but I have 2x for everything of value (with the exception of only having 1x hypno).

There are literally dozens of different card draw cards in the og tcg. It's pretty obvious that Dena consulted heavily with the tcg creators to balance the game and they've got dozens of every type of card to pull from. There will be plenty of ways to displace research.

but in the pikachu pack you are missing things like Raichu and baby Zapdos both good performers in tournaments

yet you add Butterfree, Dugtrio and Hypno that all performed worse than;
Arcanine EX, Blastoise EX, Omastar, Magneton, Jolteon and Nidoking in tournaments yet you do not include those

anf for example where are Victreebel, Baby Charizard, Alakazam and likely many others that are better performers than things like Primeape and Melmetal?

and where are dragonite and pidgeot? ffs

you include shit that never performed in tournaments and you skip things that did and do perform well in them

Creatures INC designs the cards, arts and game rules, all gameplay is made by them

TPC decides the monetization scheme and does publicity

game is not made by dena, its coded by dena, its a 3 company joint operation between DeNa (coding / UI), Creatures INC (game and card design) and TPC (monetization and publicity)

IIRC there were two big spikes of HP inflation about 5 and 10 years ago. Gigantamax pokemon were the recent one, they instantly added like +70 hp to the average overnight (Vmax pokemon give 3 prizes when theyre knocked out)

Reminds me of a chess variant I played where losing both knights (all the reliable protectors), losing the queen (ransom to the king), or being put into check (not just checkmate, but regular check) were the win conditions. Every type has a vague gimmick for flavour. Cards don't have to be designed specifically within it, but having a general theme of it adds flavour and diversity to the way types feel. If every energy engine in the game played the same,

Fire is about burning energy, so a lot of fire types discard fire energy. The high cost of their attacks due to this lets you balance for a more consistent/immediate/powerful energy engine than other types (eg Moltres EX can set up turn 1 and immediately generate energy, vs Gardevoir which requires a minimum of turn 3)

Electric is about speed. A lot of things in it don't deal huge damage but in return can be set up very quickly. Pikachu EX can be throwing out 90 damage as a basic on turn 2. That's why it's energy engine is fairly limited (requires both Magneton and Surge and then Surge himself is limited in application). But they don't really need an engine anyway.

Dark is generally about disruptive play. Poison, retreat blocking etc.
Fighting is about simple high damage for high cost.

You didn't miss much. Even if you wailed for a character, they were power crept in less than a year. I remember dropping almost 200$ in October for a character and getting crept by new years. Don't judge me too hard. It was the first time I started making decent money. I don't whale anymore. I will say that Masters had huge waifu-fagging because you were pulling for characters and not just pokemon. I whaled hard for Blue/Blastoise and I still don't regret it.

I want this card so bad that I'm genuinely tempted to chase it instead of getting Pika packs cause I've not touched Pika packs yet at all. I already have Charizard EX in both Crown and Immersive rarities, so I'm not desperate for more Charizard packs otherwise, and I have a full Mewtwo deck already.

I think if it's gonna be three months before the next set though I should probably focus Pika now and then chance Sabrina full art.

If you use butterfree I think he's best when butterfree is the only grass type lineup in your deck, maybe even as extreme as a 2-1-1 or even 1-1-1 line of butterfree, that way you maximize the odds of searching out the butterfree evolution alternatively,

basically caterpie theoretically wants to be run with as few other grass pokemon as possible to make it more consistent, while also accomplishing the goal of freeing up deck space. sadly, nothing in particular presents itself as a benefit to this extra deck space since we don't have a lot of trainer cards to stuff our deck with. i still plan to play a few games to see who some interesting partners could be on both butterfree/solo caterpie sides.

The goofiest deck I've played is Fearow/Pidgeot. Basically you try to never let them attack by forcing them to switch out mons and removing energy. It's not good but it is funny.

I think the best way to use him is one of in a non grass deck. Butterfree is not bad if you're playing tanky mons like meltan or even muk/weezing and people seriously undervalue the card draw, drawing one extra card can be huge.

I was around when Masters started but I wasn't into a waifu game. I started with go day -1 but once I realized the only way to advance in the game is to grind your Pokemon into dust I realize it wasn't for me.

I'm glad I got into Pocket on release but I hope they keep it accessible for new players no matter when they start. Otherwise the game will turn stale and it will be just a couple wales trying to outdo each other.

missed the last thread but that guy actually has good advice for people new to the game. to add on a bit, letting your opponent decide where damage is going is really bad for you. it's why cards like sabrina and x speed are so good.

starmie's 130hp is dwarfed by venusaur's huge 190hp, but how much health does each player have on the board at any given time? if each player has a full board and everything set up (which won't really happen, but still), how much of each player's pokemon's hp is being used? your opponent WANTS you to use the active spot as a choke point where you're just funneling all of your pokemon through one at a time to get ko'd.

venusaur, being kind of stuck in the active is pretty much using it's 190 and then dying. starmie can take a hit and then retreat for free- so that means starmie's hp + one benched pokemon's hp is actively engaged and usable in the game. starmie's health is getting 'extended' by the benched pokemon. If that pokemon is another starmie, then you have yet another pokemon whose HP is actively available and 'extending' the amount of HP that is in play and denying your opponent a point. you absolutely should be building your decks with a retreat strategy. make the damage requirement for your opponent to get a point as high as possible!

Like other anons said, it's for flavor and to give Fire a distinctive playstyle. Grass is usually about sustain and healing, because plants are the world's basic energy source and nutrient gathering organisms, with a side of status effects. Water is abundant and ever-flowing, so they have stuff like Misty; as a source of life itself, it also has some healing stuff. Dark is all about nasty strats (it's called the Evil type in japanese for a reason) and it thrives in disruption and statuses. Fighting is simple and straight forward, so they hit hard for relatively little setup, but are also limited by this linearity. Fire, then, is all about massive destructive power that also consumes itself.

Ugly photo because I didn't want to make an account but this deck is pretty fun. It's not reinventing the wheel, just aiming to apply status effects. With luck on your side you can defeat even Pikachu EX despite the bad type matchup, and I have the screenshots to prove it. Yes, you can't start with it because Helioptile needs electric energy but once you evolve it kills every Lapras EX, Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos. I'm building Heliolisk+Fighting deck next. It's the best splash card I have used.

That's why for Venu decks you don't necessarily want to swing him in as soon as you get it. If you have, for example, Lilligant, you use her as long as possible to tank (100HP isn't huge but it's respectable) and generate extra energy before going down. That way you have 100 more health and the possibility of pulling Venu back if needed with extra energies + X Speed. Sometimes I'll use an Erika on Lilli not because she's more important than Venu, but because damage on her doesn't threaten my Venusaur's ability to sit on active when he gets there AND gives me an energy net positive for various shenanigans.
Also important to note that sometimes you're better holding a basic in your hand than putting it down (matchup dependant) because while the extra HP could help, you're risking more points for the opponent that you can't always afford.

I mean, Eggy helps in a different way. His role is to threaten early so the opponent has to be careful and play around him while you set up Venu in the back, plus potentially being able to come in for a big swing if necessary.
I haven't played with Egg yet, but the low cost makes him come online really early and, depending on luck, you could potentially end the game before Venu even hits the field. It's a speed option for the normally slow stall of grass decks, so they fulfill different roles.

The Misty is huge for this deck. Even if you are in a situation where you have only a snom and jigglypuff in play, getting one or two heads with Misty for anon means you can focus entirely on powering up Jigglypuff. Here the Articuno is much more desirable than the EXs you named off. It only loses you one prize, and the paralysis is essentially the same thing as Sleep. A turn one Articuno with three heads from Misty will one shot most basics and then you have a 50% chance of paralyzing whatever is left alive. I appreciate your input though

The wishlist feature for wonder picks might actually increase the odds of seeing picks show up with cards you want. I don't have a huge wish list but I tend to see wonder picks with at least one heart on them for a card I still don't have. That might be by default though, that wonder picks skew towards giving you a chance at something new

yes, he's still strong with venusaur but I think it's mostly because egg is already strong on his own. i don't think they really contribute a whole lot to each other aside from covering for the phases of the game where the other card struggles. you do also put a fuckton of hp in front of your opponent between exeggutor and venusaur.

You get your daily free ticket from the shop as well, so 180/mo guaranteed, plus whatever we get from events. The Lapras event also has some tickets for first time completion and as a chance prize for repeat clears. i have misty cards now that i've pulled everything worthhile from charizard but its usually a dead card in starmie/greninja. both of them only need 2 energy to attack, and since they need an extra turn to evolve anyway you're not really getting ahead much with misty. it's situationally nice to get a backup attacker charged i guess

I also think it's a worse synergy, but my point is that either route is a different logic/playstyle. One leans into the tanking and plays the long game. It's one where you *need* your pieces to make the plan work and you bank on your cards not fucking you up too bad.
The other is about having flexibility to do one thing or the other in different phases of the match. It gives you a bit more wiggle room for bad draws and/or unexpected situations because both big boys do their own thing.

you know that idea of stronger card independence is probably the most compelling case i've heard for exeggutor, planning for the best case where you neatly have both cards in hand on time is a losing strategy in pocket. really if you can successfully set up both of them it probably doesn't really matter how perfectly they synergize

After spending four straight months and over ten thousand dollars pulling 120 packs a day, you'll be all ready for the next set! I genuinely can't believe they planned the time between sets to match up with the theoretical time it would take a hyper-whale to be finished with a set

Exactly. A lot of the stronger decks fully commit to their one gameplan/gimmick (Pika and pals, Moltres pumping Zard, Garde pumping Mewtwo, Misty in general) but the common flaw of all of those is that they're crippled if the gimmick gets messed up.

Pika is worthless without a bench, which can be dragged in with Sabrina; Zard is a sitting duck without excess energy to offset the nuke cost; Mewtwo is somewhat frail as far as EXs go and also needs to have reserves; Misty.
On the other hand, if you have a more flexible deck, you probably won't have the overwhelming presence those have when they get fully going, but you're not praying and seething till you get there, either. Maybe you can even stop them from getting online in the first place and, if not, at least you have something to fall back on.

No. He's defenseless without 4 energies and his HP threshold is less safe (M2 + Gio, for example). EX has some way to put damage on without needing full energy (no need to delay evo a turn for Ivysaur to attack since Venu EX can also do the same attack) and he survives most anything short of Zard nuke. The only advantage he offers is not needing to be as careful because of the 2 prizes, but if you're gonna go Venu, you're already saving him for late game anyway so it's kind of moot at that point.

I think pika is going to fall off in a big way. The rat’s low hp and underwhelming mid/late game damage output are already difficult to play around at times. Unless the deck somehow gets faster + more consistent in the next set, it’s hard to imagine it keeping up. The deck won’t be complete shit or anything. Pikachu ex is just going to become more and more of a liability as time goes on.

For me the most frustrating losses are when I pick the wrong option but it wasn't why I lost.

Like I can choose between putting the Vulpix or the Magmar in the active spot. Vulpix wins if I draw Ninetails, Magmar wins if I draw Blaine. I pick Magmar and then remember that Vulpix's attack might give me a second turn. The I draw Ninetails, so I didn't lose because of my mistake, I just lost because of the regular luck of the draw coin flip that I thought I was making. It's infuriating.

The problem with Caterpie is that by himself really all he does is provide more consistency to mid decks.

Like cool you run 2 Caterpie and now you can draw Venusaur EX's entire line 90% of the time instead of 60% in the first couple turns. But now you're down 2 points because Caterpie sucks. No current grass deck is really strong enough to trade consistency for power.

i would gladly get closer to guaranteeing games where a caterpie gets sacrificed but venusaur ex comes out every time. that is how you win tcgs. i see your point though, venusaur still won't beat pikachu as the best deck. that said, my goal isn't to make venusaur the best deck- it's to make the best venusaur deck.

Personally I wouldn't say that I'm "allowed" to lose 3 ex mons before losing if I lose right afterwards.
You could say "forces you to lose 3 ex mons before losing" or "makes you lose" but allows is simply the wrong word which no one above room temperature IQ would say unless they are ESL.

And if you had any reading comprehension you would see I already accounted for that

It was horrible word choice that gives a false impression of the risks you are ALLOWED to take in a given game.

Everyone that doesn't have an issue with the post is actually showcasing their aspie autism levels as they have no way to communicate like an actual person who understands the English language.
