It's about not dwelling on the past because it turns you bitter and resentful. He learned how to trust others and how to move on and focus on the positives in his life.
He also likely wouldn't even have survived the heavy neglect we went through as a kid without a Pokémon to take care of him because his parent left him on his own when he was a small kid.
