It's pretty fun, started playing like four days ago. It's literally impossible for me to spend money on it since the game isn't allowed in my country unless I use a VPN which I'm too lazy to get, so I'm doing fine so far. Just wish I had better luck with my pulls, I haven't gotten a single Dark type yet so I can't get started on a Dark deck.

neither pack selection nor wonder pick selection affect anything, its all predefined as soon as you commit to doing it

you can test it yourself by entering a pack selection or wonderpick, disconnecting your internet or entering airplane mode, seeing the results
opening the account on another device will show you that you have the cards that you got while you were offline

so its either predefined or the app has magic

the game is 90% decided by the initial coinflip
and the other 10% by the initial hand and first turn

after that its just a flowchart to finish the match and there are very few situations where the result might vary over the course of the game

once you know your deck, the opponents deck, who goes first and the starting hands and setups its pretty obvious who wins, its just a matter of playing it out over the next 5 to 10 minutes or not

Not him. I’m going to say you’re wrong, but that’s probably fueled by my experience in running a pika deck. There are preferred moves for situations like going 1st vs going 2nd, but my gameplan is very reactive to my opponent’s board state. I do think it’s fair to say that most decks aren’t capable of being as flexible as pika right now. However, I would expect that to improve a bit with time.

All that being said, I do have games that are just fucked from the start.

>they use research + 2 pokeballs
>red card somehow bricks me harder
I’ve made some ridiculous comebacks, but sometimes there really is no hope. I’m still dumb enough to play it out, though.

I do think when more support variety is added and the game expands out more, the game will be more reactive overall. It's not impossible for them to expand on more mechanics later down the line. Personally I feel multi energy decks are super flaky right now and I'd like to see some cards to help with that.

sucks ass when someone gets jackpot from Misty and deletes me turn 1 with Articuno EX but at least it's over quickly

Can't be bothered to screenshot, but it's a fairly standard Charizard/Moltres deck. Even though it's winning, it's mind numbing because it all ends the same way. It only loses to Misty and abysmal draws.

The decks I really want to play are Nido because their art look good, Seadra/Greninja because it sounds fun and Blaine because I'm firefag but I miss critical cards to make them reliable.

Well, yeah. People are just a little too quick to use it in my opinion. I’ve won plenty of games that others would have lost due to a scoop (opponent gets misty + blizzard off on their first turn, stacked full hp zard hits the field with no one of one shotting it on mine, etc.). This is fairly casual and should be used as a learning tool if you plan to play for a while. You don’t learn much from raking your cards off the table and running away.

The bit about conceding on the final turn after your opponent plays the “gotcha” card (gio, sabrina, x speed, red card, etc.) is just childish in my opinion. Doesn’t really make me mad. It’s just obvious that they aren’t doing it to save time. They’re trying to save face.

As someone who has done it, it's mostly a carry over from the former line of thinking.
"I've basically lost and should just concede but hey if they don't Sabrina me I can live"

So basically from at least 1 turn in advance you already know whether you won or lost based on if they have Sabrina or Gio or whatever, and you have been spending a lot of time just waiting for them to reveal it or not, and that can get annoying because you still have to play out the turn but you're just waiting for your opponent to reveal the gotcha card or not, so finally by the time they do it turns into a "Oh good I can finally concede now (because I couldn't concede until you revealed that gotcha card)

Ofc sometimes you misplay or are salty over brick hands and your opponent top decking the gio/Sabrina, but zi wouldn't inherently call it childish, though at that point it is probably nice to let them just swing, though not every opponent solves things so quickly and simply.

Yes. I've always been a scrub at heart so I've mostly been playing lower meta decks like Blaine and Poliwrath.
I bought the Gardevoir pack, all the discounted gold, and a 20 dollar pack. I don't plan on buying anymore until new packs and a discount happen.

Starmie ex is the only ex pokemon I want to see banned. Literally every other ex is fine, even Pikachu ex, since they can be countered easily. Starmie ex though? If you don't have anything that can do 130 damage in one hit, or if you don't get insanely lucky with sleep/paralysis coin flips, that star WILL shred at least one of your pokemon, without fail. It's even worse with the CPU opponents because if a Staryu comes out, it WILL evolve next turn if it isn't dealt with right then and there, no exceptions.

I wish we could have "X's Pokémon" and if you use that supporter on them it boosts their effects.
So, for example, if you use Brock with pic related, you'd get 2 energies, or something like Giovanni's Nidoking would get an extra 20 damage if you Gio it.

It is pretty busted. It's nice that water has a beat stick for when their Misty inevitably flops, but this is crazy. Comparing it to Egg Ex is a fuckin joke. I'm not even sure how to fix it. Maybe something like:

I feel like taking away damage or health is a bad idea because it IS an Ex. It needs to be beefy and hit hard. So all that's left is to slow it down and don't let it slip away without punishment.

I run it with double Weezing and 1 Farfetch'd.
2 Kogas and 2 Potions keep them alive long enough to set up Dragonite most of the time, Farfetch'd can be a good starting mon or come in later to clean up.
The risky part is running 3 energy, some games you can get bricked because that last water/electric just doesn't want to come out, but having the option to deal some damage on top of poison has won me games especially vs Psychic decks.

This only matters specifically vs pokemon with health values between 110-150(160 with giovanni) and everything above dies to 2 hits weather it be Gengar or Mewtwo. There is also the option of not running any EX pokemon but I don't have the cardpool to test that out yet. I still think 1 Mewtwo EX is good to run as a revenge killer to sweep once your main threat is taken care of.

I think it’s a little silly, but it’s the meta. Give it time to settle. Pika is overrated (a bit) and very popular. Arcanine’s relevance is tied to that, so well what what changes.

Mewtwo is weirdly underrated right now. I think the deck is a little boring, but to me, it only seems slightly less consistent than pika (if at all).

Your problem isn't the amount of pokemon you have, but which ones you have. You running 3 different families and 3 basics. It's no wonder you never get what you need because you're looking for too many different things with no consistency.

This isn't a suggestion, but an example: if you cut the pidgeys and meowth in lieu of adding in more staryus, an articuno, and another Lapras, then you would probably feel much more consistent. If you love those cut pidgeys, then go make a second deck around them. They don't necessarily need to be in here. Again, that's not a suggestion. Figure out what you want to do with the deck/what you enjoy playing and focus around that. Trim the fat and make the deck more reliable.

Here's another example. It's pretty obvious what the goal of this deck is. Every card serves make Venusaur work. There's no fluff. I don't need an Egg Ex because he doesn't help the Venusaur. Butterfrees are nice, but 3 cards is a big investment that probably won't even get played consistently. I love Pinsir, but there's no way I would slot him in over, say, X speeds or Potions. Find your purpose and pursue it.

I agree that they aren't ideal but Haunter's attack costing 1 energy means that you can put the energy towards something else + evolutions works as a pseudoheal. Garde evolution line in itself is kinda underrated as the active pokemon. Going first you might miss out on Ralts/Kirlia attacks but Garde can give herself energy so turn 5 she ramps herself to attack. There is also the promo haunter coming soon with a 50 dmg attack on a coinflip if you want a higher potential. Presonally I like the psychic deck because of no reliance on RNG

I am having a (surprising) amount of success with the deck from the pic, after a bunch of thinking and experiments with Dragonite. While we're at it, I'm looking for opinions/critique.
Here are some thoughts I had about Dragonite:
1) The 2 "standard" Dragonite lists seem to be the Weezing/Koga stall and the Frosmoth/Misty "stally" but more proactive version.
2) I played both and disliked both. The additional failure point of being reliant on evolving a basic to even establish a stall makes the whole deck too unreliable.
3) Additionally, the payoff for establishing a stall that requires an evolution is small. 20-30 damage from Weezing's poison on one of the opposing Pokemon nearly never changes the outcome of Dragonite attacks, which are the source of all your points. And Frosmoth is just a worse Weezing most of the time, since it's rarely worth to spend energy on it if Misty fizzled and both its stages are squishier.
4) Solution: stall only with basics. And since you can only improve your energy economy through Misty, pick only from the Water ones. Non-ex versions of the legendary birds have the best hp/retreat cost ratio among basic pokemon at 100/1, so we go with Articuno.
5) Running just the Articuno for stalling makes your stall both easier to establish and stronger by enabling you to add 2 Potions, which don't fit in the standard decklists - a single Potion can often give you an extra turn by itself.

6) The obvious downside of this approach is that Articuno serves just as a meatshield most of the time, since it requires even more energy than a Frosmoth. But in practice this works fine due to 3): you usually get all your 3 points when Dragonite comes online, and this is made easier now. In the somewhat rare event where Articuno gets all the necessary energy, he can stall even better due to paralysis (or even win the game turn 1/2 like the Ex version).
7) Another downside is the fact that Articuno gets oneshot by Pikachu. But so do Koffing, Snom and Frosmoth, so in most situations this is not a change for the worse.
8) And the last clear downside is the fact that scooping up a Weezing with Koga effectively heals it, so it can be reused in some slower games, providing way more effective HP than Articuno.
9) I still see some room for experiments with other Water basics:
- for a very proactive approach, Pyukumuku can provide surprising early game pressure with 30 damage for just 1 energy possibly received for free from Misty, but it's way less bulky (70 HP, so it dies from relatively common 80 damage attacks etc.);
- Lapras is just as tanky as Articuno, but it's way easier to attack with it (again, only 1 energy). But its 20 damage will often be negligible and its retreat cost of 2 is very bad for our energy economy;
- Bruxish is a middle ground alternative and opens up the somewhat interesting possibility of using it to clean up Pokemon damaged by Dragonite, but it's very "meh" otherwise: a 2 energy attack will be possible way less often than a 1 energy one in this deck and 90 HP also isn't perfect (oneshot by boosted 80 HP attacks, Starmie, etc.)

If you go second and have a stacked bench, I like to play pika ex in the active first. Saves resources and lets you swing hard as early as possible for the small cost of a little damage on pika upfront. There are times where this is not the play, but in general, it’s the go-to.

It's a casual game so tournament or IRL play etiquette isn't common knowledge.

When someone meets win condition when playing in a tourney or with friends it's polite to concede, absolutely. Yeah, the key to pika is to swing as early as you can with that 90 damage because the deck struggles hard as the opponent begins to set up. That’s why you need to have a plan early in the game for how you will conserve points while pinning the opponent if you aren’t able to rush down. Most games don’t end that easily.

I was wondering how they might restrict it, but that unfortunately sounds like it makes the most sense logically. That's already how they limit being able to flair things. They might keep it from being exploitable by requiring you to have gotten it multiple times.

The time red card has been most effective against me is turn 1 when I lose my evos in hand. Then I have to rely in drawing them in the right order but it can set me back so much I lose. I threw a Hypno on mine and I’m winning even when Misty shits the bed because getting 1 turn for Water is worth its weight in gold. The risk of solo Drowzee brick sucks but it’s pretty unlikely and the upsides outweigh the benefits. Has an incredible matchup vs other Water decks too

I'm pretty surprised with how balanced the game is. Yes there are things at the top of the meta and the bottom but the drop to Brock compared to other Supporters is huge. I have hear people mention Blastoice, Machamp, or Gengar as the worst EX and even the worst EX is usable. Surge is not a good supported but it's usable. Brock is unusable and the Pokemon it targets are unusable. I can't think of another reason other than it being intentional. Maybe they didn't want to balance against Pikachu.

Same. They did an excellent job creating this launch set. The thing is that Brock isn't just bad as a support, he's just genuinely the worst fuckin card in the entire game. It's impressive how bad it is. Like, I can't think of a way to make it worse.

I mean, imagine if Misty could only target Gyarados (it's on theme, even). She would still be okay. Like, yeah, the deck probably wouldn't win any tourneys, but Blaine decks still get into the top 8 pretty often. And only 1 of Blaine's 3 can really get good use out of it by just barely killing Pikachu.

Chadizard deck just rules, and I don't even have a second Moltres ex. All you need is stalling until Charizard is up to 5 fire energies and then you can just wreck shit up. Have fodder like Rapidash and Moltres to switch to when they use Sabrina, two X Speeds and you win most match ups. Don't even need that much luck on coin flips.

Nah, that’s fine. The biggest issue is that Surge wastes your support for the turn (when you really need Gio for Mewtwo knockouts) and requires you to move all lighting energy from the bench. If you got to choose the amount of energy to move (or even had it worded like “up to three lightning energy), Surge would be much better (as well as cards like Raichu, Electrode, and Magneton).

Surge isn’t very good right now. I’d almost rank him lower than Brock if I didn’t think 1x Surge was decent in a Pika ex deck running Raichu as a backup nuke.

To be fair, there kind of is shit all for a few types in general right now.
Electric is carried mostly by Pika EX, Electrode, and Zapdos EX.
Zebstrika is a bit of a meme, Electabuzz and Heliolisk are flip memes, Eelektross is too costly, Raichu has the whole energy dump thing, and Magneton is only useful for enabling Raichu.
Pinurchin is alright, I guess.

Focus on a single booster pack and eventually you'll manage to build a good deck. Don't fall for the Marowak meme, or the Articuno-Mishitsty meme. Zebstrika gives you a better turn 1 gameplan, and it can set up valuable pins when pika hits the field on turn 7 (RIP). I do not like spending 2 energy on a mon, but the coin flips have bailed me out of some horrific game states in the past.

I've been playing a dragonite deck since inception that i grinded for because it's boss as fuck, and then a yesterday i pulled back to back mewtwoEX immersive arts and a gardevoir. so of course I tossed together a deck just to see how the other side lives and jesus fucking christ. It has more moving pieces than my dragonite deck, but it is infinitely more consistent.
What in sweet mother fucking hell is up with this shit. Like dragonite is the 6 cards of the family and 2 kanga, the rest is whatever and sometimes it flops, it happens, i can't complain. But fucking mewtwo has consistently won every game i've played with it, in the exact same way. No variance, it's a win. What the fuck.

I pulled an immersive Mewtwo ex just now and I got one from wonder picking the other day. I only have a single Gardevoir with no other members of that line but I'm going to focus on Mewtwo booster now to try to build that deck. I'm happy with my Charizard which beats Mewtwo decks 9 out of 10 times but I'd like to try something faster, more consistent, and less reliant on either stalling or coin flipping.

anyways im done ranting, but i would recommend just buying singles of ralts/kirlia, i only run the 1 gardevoir and it works just fine. even the op seeing the set up for gardevoir puts them on their toes and makes them play a little sub optimally

Depends on the deck but, if you can afford it, run only two basics. That way you get on of the starting hand any Pokéball has 2/3 chance of giving you the other one. Sabrina is a pretty universal slot-in on any deck, as is Gio, but Sabrina is more important.
2 Oak, 2 Ball, 2 Sab, 2 X-Speed is already 8 cards. 2 Erika for grass/2 Potion for other decks makes half of it already supporters. Organize the other half as you wish.

I’m at 29 wins with an 85% win rate using a pikachu deck. Wound up going so deep for the zapdos ex copies that I can’t really run anything other than pika variations. I should have a few meme decks ready soon, but my luck hasn’t been great outside of pulling several illustration rare pikachu. I think I may have a couple of meme decks ready soon.

I really like card games in this primitive state, in which more or less half of the deck is staples, the meta is "solved" as in there are a couple decks that have slightly more consistency than others, but still have clear counters, and aren't too far from tier 2 decks that can easily steal wins from them, and rogue/meme decks can actually put up a decent fight. Reminds me of ygo's goat format.
Next set is probably going to ruin everything, isn't it?

I feel like that's most card games. I liked the League card game a fuckton at launch and even a bunch of patches after it, but it became pretty bad later on. Maybe the downward slide won't happen until after a couple of sets down the line, but card games just seem destined to get worse past a certain point after launch.

Immersion? It’s supposed to make it fun, like picking out a pack at the store as a kid. The whole thing is one big attempt at creating a nostalgia trip which is why there’s a collection element and trading. If they wanted to make a straight gacha we’d be fighting whales with Pikachu GX that have a damage and hp boost and can only be obtained after exchanging 5 copies and billions of levelup materials

Pika is kind of a meme, at least when we’re talking about “meta = free wins” comments. Good pika decks and players are more flexible than any other deck right now, and pika’s low health + mediocre mid/late game damage make the ex just a little bit of a liability as the game goes on. I think pika matches are often exciting for these reasons.

Compare this to mewtwo decks where the game state is much more rigid. I don’t find that to be as compelling, personally, and while I’m on the subject, I find it odd how often people are downplaying mewtwo ex.

Mewtwo is such a boring deck. Either you get the gardevoir or you don't. Charizard goes over you, Pikachu goes under you. People refuse to play cards other than Mewtwo or Gardevoir because the deck has no staying power on a low roll. I hesitate to even call the deck midrange because it's not like you even have any resources to burn, you just cross your fingers and hope you get the "I win" card. It's less midrange and more "fast control".

The poison deck isn't bad, but I fucking never get Muk off, ever. If I start with Grimer then he just dies before I get Muk and if I try to get Muk out earlier, the only way to use Muks bonus anymore is Weezing and Ive never had it work out that way, most common reason being because I dont even draw Muk in the first place.
