I think 70HP is fair, with the need to still attach 4 energy it could be a cool glass cannon card.

I followed the flowchart and spent the early turns pumping Char through a Moltres and evolving. Then switched in the to the mon they were building with X-speed and the game was effectively over without me doing any damage. An all too common occurrence.

Yeah. The 'uno had one energy already so it was 18x and I added that turn's energy to my Lapras. My opponent didn't even concede either, bless their heart. I added them after the match. I thought I was having a stroke so I can only imagine what they were thinking.

A pack is 6 gold so picrel is slightly under what you need for it.
Not including the monthly sub and discounted bundles the best deal would be the most expensive option which is common in most gacha.

The pass is the best option in terms of price, 30 packs through the whole month, exclusive cards and accessories compared to what you get for buying PokeGold. On the other hand, you're paying for digital cards that will eventually disappear once the game reaches EoS and the cards might get rotated in the future so older packs might become completely useless in terms of deckbuilding.

Its up to you, but personally I would never spend money on live service games, let alone developed by DeNA.

I really dig what they did. When they added fairy type cards, you had dark, steel, dragon, electric, and fire that all had one type in them, and the others were over saturated. Combining poison into dark as the "bad guy" color makes sense, and fairy into psychic makes it the "mystic" color. Dragon being dual type energy based makes it so other types like fire or electric have energy uses that aren't that one type. The system makes sense imo

What happens if you use Magneton ability in a deck that doesn't use lightning energy? I don't have it so I can't try. I suppose it doesn't work but since they don't really explain how the energy zone work maybe it just generates one lightning energy out of thin air and you could technically splash it in another mono energy deck.

I played it with one or two kangashkans to serve as early walls, they do a fantastic job giving you the time you need to set up.
the issue is you have to run so many pokemons you don't have any room for trainer beside oaks, balls and escape pills so it's a bit too honest for its own good

Moltres EX is so strong. Its a shame there isn't a godly stage 1 red Mon to go with it. I saw someone playing sizzlepeedo and it didn't seem absolutely terrible. So Pikafags,
What are we thinking as our build these days?
Some thoughts I have so far :
One Zapdos Ex makes a lot of sense
Voltorb electrode seems most consistent
The Paralyze basic Mon actually seems quite good
Zebra does lots of damage

I've even considered just playing themselves 1 of the electric eel BC the stats are decent.

Raichu also seems not terrible and Lt surge can do some tricky stuff.

I find it very interesting the tournament results have everything except the electric ell so far from what I can tell.

It would be nice if something other than surge would let you move energy.

Gardevoir can Power itself and any other Psychic so you can splash it along with a Psychic into any deck. Magneton can power itself and transfer with Surge to Raichu, Electrode, or Electabuzz. I think the other Pokemon and Surge might be too much but it just makes Magneton more splashable than I previously thought. Brock can splash Golem, and Misty can splash any water type. The main issue with Gardevoir and Magneton is that their previous forms require energy of their type so those strategies are purely bench backups. Maybe the strategy will pan out once more cards come out.

If you look at the matchups the Raichu variant has the best winrate ~60% vs other Pikachu decks and considering Pikachu is one of the most popular decks that should give it the slight edge overall.

Gengar himself is fine. 100 damage for 3 is playable. The issue with most of these stage 2 lines is the stage 1 pokemon. Machamp is the only line with a stage 2 that's actually playable. Everything else is an 80/90 HP liability.

Doesn't mean much if the opponent is an Articuno with either 3+ energy or 0 on turn 1. Zapdos EX can either do 200 damage or 0. Shit like that quite literally just luck. It's pure luck whether you get your Gardevoir, or your EX, or any fucking Pokemon. You can start off with your basic Pokemon and draw nothing but trainer cards until you get 2 Pokeballs at the very end from your last Professor's Research. Statistically unlikely sure. But it's not impossible, because this game is completely random in the end. All you can do is hope the opponent makes enough mistakes to offset their given advantage, alternatively avoid making enough mistakes to give up your given advantage. It's not a balanced game. You're not going in with an equal chance of winning. You can't go into a match with worse RNG on your side and snatch victory from them by "playing better". You have to rely on your opponent to make enough mistakes that they throw. The onus is not on you. The onus is always on the guy with the better luck.

Well, these types of games tend to have bigger playerbases in Japan than they do in america meaning higher supply of JP cards and less of ENG cards, maybe english will be slightly better for trading in that regard.
The issue, though, is that MTG is an american TCG, so it makes sense for JP player wanting the original versions of each card rather than the localized versions, but this game is Japanese, so that appeal of owning the original version of the card doesn't exist and that may impact whether or not nips want the ENG cards or not.
I'm also curious about what will be of other languages like french, german and spanish.

Yeah Zapdos is the most powerful wall in the entire game. Starting with a Zapdos in the active spot kills so much of the opponent's aggression. If you had to start on Pikachu or Pimcurchin or something, there'd be a risk of the opponent's Kanga or Rapidash taking points or putting in important levels of chip damage. But Zapdos just soaks it and then retreats out. And if it needs to, it can poke at the opponent's frontline to hit Pikachu breakpoints, and eventually ramp up into a damage dealer. It's pretty notable that it can trade blows with (or even kill) every ex and stage 1 basic in the game, while having a low retreat cost. The 1 energy attack is busted out the ass.

I played heroic the entire time in MTG Standard during the Abzan period and I adamantly said instead the best deck. No one agreed until the last 2 events where Brad Nelson, the best player in the world at the time, played heroic and saodnthe same thing.
My Mewtwo build feels exactly the same way.

You fundamentally don't have agency to win a game where your opponent got better RNG. You just don't. The agency is always on the player with the better RNG. They can either maneuver it to a win, or they can potentially throw it, giving their opponent (you in this case) a chance to catch the throw. Now this might be true for a lot of turn based games, even games like chess, but the difference is this is a very low variance game. It doesn't have the complexity of chess. There's only so many moves you can make and most of the times it's pretty blatantly obvious which the right one is. Meaning it should be pretty easy to navigate yourself to a win if you happen to draw better RNG than your opponent.

The average chess game lasts for about 80 moves. The average PTCGP game last around 8 and were in reality "decided" about 4 rounds before that. It's laughable to try to compare them. There are better card games, I'm not disputing that. PTCGP is one of the most watered down simplistic braindead TCG's out there (it's actually THE most, out of the ones I've played).

You have many more decisions each game in the TCG. Also more =\= harder. Chess is mostly about studying, very little in-game processing happens at the highest levels until deep in the end game.

Base mewtwo is only good of you already have gard and lack ex m2. Humorously, it makes gard less likely and lacking mewtwo ex less likely. Also base m2 is bad in the mirror and m2 is the best deck. Hope that makes some sense. Also, 2 m2 ex is how you beat pika. Base can fill in fine there, but is worse early game.

Yes, I know you are playing the odds but they aren’t always going to swing your way and that includes the coin flip at the beginning of the game. The utility of a 120 hp shield to eat Sabs, play out of bricks and finish games is very valuable. You should at least be able to see that now.

Now that the two week free pass is over, I wondered if I'd miss it but honestly the pass seems kind dumb. Obviously in practice getting 50% more packs per day is a meaningful advantage but in practise I don't feel different cause now I'm just opening one pack in the morning and one in the evening, instead of two in the morning and one in the evening.

There aren't enough 100 HP pokemon. Decks like this are unplayable when you auto lose to Pikachu and Starmie no matter what hand you draw. 90 damage is too powerful of a breakpoint, they both need to be nerfed to 80.

Between the freebies and the pass, I’ll have ~90 packs to open, and I’ve been saving hourglasses for the next set for at least a week now. As long as wonder pick isn’t a complete faggot, I’ll have just about everything of value (in terms of deck building) from this set for very little cost.

Can’t say for sure how long I’ll continue the membership, but I think it’s not a total wash this early into the game.

An aggro check is fine, that's not the issue. Aggro checks are already in the game in the form of cards like Sandslash. The issue is just the 90 damage breakpoint making huge numbers of pokemon completely unplayable.

Ninetales has only 90 HP so it's way easier to revenge kill and has a downside. Compare that to Pikachu who has 120 HP and is a base pokemon or Starmie with 130 HP, no retreat cost and no downside on its attack.

You stall with Kangaskhan or Weezing. 200 damage is very scary even if it's split. Most likely you're going to get at least one kill because the opponent will have some weak basic mon on the bench. At best you're lucky if you kill any EX mons they might have. His 160 HP bulk is also massive as only a few things can reliably one shot him.

There are lots of good stage 1s and a handful of good basics. But there are also lots of pokemon that are completely unusable because they have 90 HP. Pinsir, Golduck, Persian, Bruxish, the stage 1s of a lot of cool lines like Ivysaur, Polywhirl, or Nidorino. Bisharp, Cincinno, Lickitung, there's a LOT of them. A lot of these pokemon couldn't trade efficiently with Pikachu or Starmie anyways, do they also have to get oneshot? It's ridiculous.

x-speeds for easy swap outs and potions are pretty good for basically every deck so if you're missing either of those they're worth getting. you can check what cards are available in what packs by selecting it and clicking on the "check offering rates" in the corner. There's a free trial for premium so you might as well do that if you haven't already. with premium you can get some quests for mewttwo items and an extra pack every day.

Ex pika and Starmie are meant to trade with two pokemon prize points if they can kill after their ex dies
farfetched and Kang or similar are usually good for early dmg, then your other poke you're setting up should kill them properly

He has good bulk making him annoying when you're opponent is trying to set up. The idea is that you tank a few hits while letting poison chip away then use Koga to scoop up and send out your heavy hitter to start cleaning house

Poison for 0 energy is really powerful, yeah. It's 20 damage per turn until your opponent evolves or switches out. Just evolving into Weezing can easily do 60-80 damage to your opponent's pokemon for free, and it resists a lot of OHKOs because of its 110 HP. It's unironically stronger and more efficient than a lot of in-colour cards, even things like Rapidash. IMO it's comparable to Kangaskhan in terms of raw power.

All these survive Pikachu/Starmie. I agree 100HP is an important benchmark to keep in mind just like 160HP. That doesn't mean they are unplayable, I'm ok playing a deck that dies to Pikachu if it can win against the majority of decks I face. I'm working on a deck that counters Pikachu but I know full well it will die to most other decks.

health is the only reason to pick him over mewtwo, there's a small number of attacks that mewtwo can't take that he can. His ability is pretty underwhelming when you consider you can only block support cards after 2+ turns with evolving, something psyduck can do immediately.

Support cards getting cucked is really underrated, gengar ex solos the entire blaine deck for free, Erika and misty can't save them, sabrina/gio you don't have to worry about, and if youre lucky you'll also cuck their professors research and tilt them even more for drawing them late
His issue is 100 dmg for stage three kinda sucks and he needs some really good help/deck magic to get around needing triple psychic and to not just roll over to 2 pika and Starmie ex in a row

That's not good enough. They have to trade semi-efficiently. Parasect doesn't trade with Pikachu. If you go first, it doesn't even get a single hit in, and if you go second it costs 3 energy to Pikachu's 2.

Some of these cards can be made stronger with the aid of supporting cards - like Parasect can survive two Pikachu attacks with an Erika and a Potion - but even then there's usually a counter (Giovanni in this case) or there's still some sort of other imbalance associated with it. And sometimes there isn't. It doesn't matter how many cards you pump into Grapploct, Dubwool, or Arcanine, they aren't efficient ways of dealing with the problem. A lot of the pokemon you listed literally do nothing going first. A lot of them are stage 2 pokemon where the stage 1 gets oneshot by Pikachu, so they can't solve the problem on their own.

Realistically, the vast majority of the pokemon you posted don't do jack shit.

I literally went through the list in about five minutes, it wasn't a fucking exhaustive analysis of every single pokemon on there. Arbok losing to both Potion and Giovanni is pretty big, but sure that's one extra pokemon that beats Pikachu. Are you going to ignore every other pokemon on the list?

The answer is that the TCG has less types than the games, so some types are merged for mechanical reasons.
Also did you really not notice that Fighting, Rock AND Ground types are all just merged into Fighting type?

Because I feel like that's the biggest example of this simplification, literally 3 types just squished into one despite ground and rock having nothing to do with Fighting.
