Gen I was only released on the 3DS in 2016, and Gen II in 2017, 5 and 6 years into the 3DS' lifespan with the latter being 6 months into the Switch's lifespan. It was the 20th anniversary, had Bank support, and was released on a handheld far past its prime to squeeze out more sales. Now the Switch is getting to that point, but it's also going to be followed by a device that works in the same ecosystem and builds upon it. Does this extend the Switch's lifespan in a meaningful way? The 3DS as a platform was at its end, and it was already an extension of the DS.
When is it most strategic to release Pokémon on NSO? I'd say Gen X is probably a good way to market them.
