Would the tcg have been better if it instead had the mechanics of a different tcg franchise, like Magic, Flesh and Blood, DBSCG, FFTCG, the Star Wars TCG or Metazoo? Has anybody ever made non-cringe card sets for any of these involving Pokémon?

All garbage. Yugioh is the only good card game if you're not a miserable dinosaur. TCG live has been more interesting to me thus far than the value peddling horseshit that most card games don't care to ever evolve past. Crashing monsters together and doing simple math is just enough to keep consumerist smoothbrains entertained without letting them get mogged by people trying to be competitive so why would they?

I don't like the idea of playing a trading card game of Pokemon that is simpler than the base game. I don't know of any existing model that accurately reproduces much less expands upon the strategic wealth the original video games offer.

Yugioh cards are essentially two stats and a bundle of abilities (if that), with spells and traps simulating everything else. But altogether you don't get an accurate representation of the way the universe is supposed to work.

So the ideal answer would have been to come up with something better, but at that point, knowing what we know about TCGs, I don't think it's even possible to begin with.

Except >>56948491 is right. The only thing they really got wrong is the comment about Traps, because very few of them are played anymore due to how stupid fast the game has gotten. The ones that do, however, are either archetypal, basically bypass being a Trap, or are the most cancerous pink cardboard ever made.

Most every monster, spell, and trap in the modern game has two effects and possibly does double duty serving as material in the graveyard etc. Monsters are much more than "two stats" which are rarely as important as their attribute, type, level, extra deck status,
and name. Their effects drive the game far more than either spells or traps in the vast majority of games. Traps both archetypal and staple are played in virtually every deck. You have never played yugioh

It was a joke about how Trap Cards are basically going extinct, with the only ones that get played being those that can bypass the properties of being a Trap Card, and instead it's all about monsters and Spells.

there are even non-stun examples which are ample exceptions to the trend

in any case a master rule change is needed instead of exception clauses as with evenly matched, infinite impermanence, and red reboot

It's not even that, 2 of the tier 1 decks in the meta currently aren't OTK combo decks. And the one OTK combo deck that's relevant only functions because of the REAL problem yugioh is currently having; decks have been streamlined to the point where you can run about 12 actual engine cards and 20 floodgates, boardbreakers, negates, and get tops. That just makes comp play boring and homogenized. Non-YCS level yugioh is probably the best its been in a long time at least. Especially since winning a tournament doesn't actually get you shit, so most people are voluntarily just not playing tier 1 because of the prices.
