The only bad accolades that Gary had was his Blastoise losing to Ash's Charizard in Johto and losing to Saturn from Galactic. Otherwise he's typically shit all over Ash in most circumstances.

No, he quit after losing to Ash, specifically, the kid he'd spent their entire lives shitting on, outperforming, and considering a complete non-threat. When "Ashyboy" beat him fair and square, it broke Gary's spirit, because it wrecked his entire worldview.

Not necessarily. Iris went on to win the Unova league offscreen despite showing no evidence that she had a desire to become a league champion the entire time she was with Ash. They could've done the same with Gary. Still urks me that the champion is considered Lance despite all evidence pointing towards the Indigo league being strutted like the RBY games while every other league has their 4 members and champions.

It was mostly just an idea to get the game Champions in there. Iris was just a weird exception to that rule because of BW2. It is strange though that they chose to go the Prof. route with Gary. Should have had him become Champion in the first place, lose to Ash in Johto, and then become the Gym Leader of Viridian with Giovanni fucking off to go do Giovanni things. Because in the anime, it's still pretty implied that he's the Gym Leader and Rocket is still a major issue in Kanto.

That was never going to happen, because Shudo was a lunatic that wanted the anime to have Ash and Pikachu suddenly become mortal enemies, building up to a human vs Pokemon civil war that would only not end in bloodshed at the last minute because Meowth would step up as a negotiator.
