Everyone can agree Unova, Johto, and Hoenn are the best regions so there doesn't need to be a genwar here. They stopped doing different sprites in different versions because that's a gross waste of resources.

It would've been too much effort, especially with the Gen 3 roadmap.
Gen 2 was only one pair of games and a third version that largely reused sprites outside of design touchups like the Houndour Line, Sneasel and Raikou, but Gen 3 would've demanded FOUR sets of sprites between Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed and LeafGreen, and that's not including Emerald serving a similar design touchup purpose as Crystal on top of giving every Pokemon a second front sprite for their appear animations.

Half of those are either poorly executed or barely have any sort of impact on the game. The postgame stuff in B/W at least is just to make up for the fact that the original region itself is both smaller and has worse exploration than previous gens. Seasons mean jack shit since they only change once a month, difficulty settings are a good idea but handled horribly, the sprite animation is okay on the actual gen 5 pokemon but sucks ass for previous gen stuff. I genuinely never even bothered with the Dream World and thought Fennel's forced tutorial about it at the start was obnoxious. I won't say gen 5 did nothing right, and I actually enjoy B/W2 a lot, but it's not an especially ambitious generation in the context of Pokemon.

It means the entire foundation of the modern game. With gen 3 they discarded everything and started fresh with completely new systems for everything that are still used today.
Also if you really want to be like that you can just say the box system, since it was introduced there hasn't been a mainline game that used anything other than gen 3's system.

Point still stands. Pokemon was a directionless franchise until LGPE, which introduced the first instance of still-present online battling, which makes it the first mainline game. And then they immediately improved on that massively with SWSH.

LGPE has online battles.
Because it has online battles, it's actually a superior game to all other iterations of Kanto, which are spinoffs because they lack online battles.
