We could start by giving Psychic an additional effect like:
Electric can't be paralyzed
Fire can't be burned
Poison can't be poisoned
Grass isn't affected by powder or spores
Ice can't be frozen
Ghost prevents escape moves
Dark can't be "tricked"

I feel like all types should have their own gimmick, I'm not including weather and terrain effects because they're more powerups than a proper type characteristic. For example making Psychic immune to being put to sleep, Water not being affected by restriction moves like Wrap, Fighting can't be confused, Fairy can't be infatuated, Bugs immune to sound-based moves.

It's Masuda's favorite type so it's been left unchecked for 20 years. If it wasn't for the fact there's usually always some objectively powerful gigachad Water type in each region there usually isn't much of a reason not to pick the Water starter over the other two since Grass and Fire have been pretty fucking shit for so many years. All types are perfectly fine as they are.
The problem is that most of their reps are either overtuned centralizing pricks (Psychic being carried by Trick Room + Psychic Terrain + Expanding Force comps, looking at you especially) or absolute dogshit with zero in-between, because the power gap is so extreme that you either work reliably for most possible enemy comps or you risk losing because you were banking on your comp going against a particular core that isn't present in the enemy's team, or worse yet, the type's entire existence hinges on fishing for RNG (hi, Ice Types!) when that's one of the most unfulfilling and risky gambits you can take in a hyperautistic meta where everyone's trying to be as optimal as possible so they can punish whiffs and mistakes as hard as possible.

I think freeze could be balanced if they just made it so that frozen Pokemon are thawed by any damaging move, not just Fire moves. It never made any sense that you could hurt a Pokemon trapped in a solid block of ice without breaking it.

Grass already has one of the best offensive matchups in the game against Water. It's issue has always been defensive, since most grass types are weak to so many things yet built defensively. It's why Pokemon like Chikorita feel awful to use.

But I can sympathize. It's a hard life being weak to Ghost and Dark. Especially after the absolute monsters those 2 got this generation. I'm too stupid to fix it, best I can think of is making miracle eye a field move that makes psychic hit all types neutrally for 4 turns or something.

Ghost is kind of hard to balance because while the type itself is good, the big issue is that less the type itself and more a few broken Pokemon happen to be Ghosts.
With Dark, nerf Knock Off it's way to brain dead and spammable.
also as someone suggsted Psychic could get its own soft effect like how Ghost is immune to trapping and Dark is immune to Prankster.

Psychic types are now immune to mental effects, which includes effects such as infatuation, taunt, encore, disable etc.
This identical to the mental herb effects and gives Psychic types a niche of being hard to disrupt compared to other pokemon. Keep in mind that flinch moves such as fake out and sleep moves such as spore still affect psychic types, so they are not impossible to interact with.
>Bug types
Fairy no longer resist Bug. Bug is now super effective against Fairy. Ghost types no longer resist bug. Bug types now resists Fairy. Bug now resists Dark.
One of the main weaknesses of Bug is that Bug type is an actively detrimental typing both offensively and defensively. These changes are made to address that.
>Rock Type
Rock slide is now 100% accurate. Rock Tomb is now 100%.
We all know this one needs to happen

I keep forgetting water isn't weak to poison
seems like 9 times out of 10 when my water types get hit with a poison sting or something they get poisoned on the first turn while my other types never do

Some Volatile Status conditions having a decreased effectiveness or simply unable to affect Psychic types.
Obviously not stuff like Salt Cure or Heal Block, but it is silly how a type that’s based around the mind falls for taunts and encores and infatuation.
And maybe outside of Fake Out Psychic types can’t be flinched either.

Psychic is largely fine. Any buffs to it would make psy spam teams an even larger problem. At most maybe you make them immune to confusion like how other types have status immunities.
