As much as people get bothered over GF banning designs for looking too similar to fans, I can't exactly think its unwarranted protocol. Pretty sure some random fanartist who made a fire/grass pepper fakemon some years before S&V got mad that scovillain was a thing, and it was spread around for a while when Scarlet and Violet first dropped and people were pissed over the bugs.

No, this is literally the case based on the Teraleak.
There was going to be a Flying Type Eeveelution in Alola, but they scrapped it because it was a "high risk" due to how many fan designs were floating out there on the internet, especially in Japan.
This is presumably what Project Eevee was originally leading up to, but in realizing that there's way too many fan designs for every single type, and even some unofficial types, they had to redirect HARD, which wound up being to their benefit, as now Eevee is now one of the biggest shillmons, and it doesn't even have to rely on its evolutions anymore to do so.

If you really liked Dunsparce at all, you liked it for being kind of doofy, lame, pathetic even. Dunsparce's appeal was its just a fuckin worm. Sure the dramatic and impressive fan evos were fun, but they were fun because of how well they juxtaposed against the real design. After years of buildup and fan agrandization, what we got is an anti-climax, but an intentional one. It's just as sad, weak, and doofy. It's perfect, and if you don't like this kind of design I dont think you were into Dunsparce in the first place.

It's all downhill 3DS onward, with a slight uptick during SM and PLA. But if you graph it, it's a steady downward trend.
Weird because the sales are inverse to the quality in the same time frame.
Theres always the possibility that I'm wrong, and have been wrong all my life, and yawnfag is vindicated.

That being said, why doesn't gamefreak just buy the designs? Just go to a creator and say "hey yeah we noticed your fan design is really similar to one we're working on. We'll give you $500 to shut up about it and let us do our thing." Like, that can't be that hard to do.

Likely because they'd still need to pay a yearly stipend or royalty to the creator for its use (they bought it, but Anon created it and is likely due such things due to not being part of GF staff, who work under contract and create designs for the company).
This could also be a throwback to the Lugia/Shudo deal and a vehement dismissal of entertaining any kind of effort in the future, meaning it was likely always the case since they first took steps to protect their IP.

I've been pretty ambivalent towards the critter. But I can't see it suddenly becoming an epic dragon; it's a fat, cowardly little thing that lives deep in the ground. And unlike your Magikarp or Wimpod that become fearsome beasts upon evolution, it isn't audaciously terrible in battle, just mediocre/below average. It doesn't seem to be special for anything other than rarity.

I never mentioned gen 5 in my post, all I did was criticize cross gen evos from the 3D era. gen 5 wasn't mentioned because it has no cross gen evos. therefor, saying "cross gen evos after gen 4" is technically the same thing as saying "cross gen evos starting with the 3D era". putting that aside, gen 5 was still the last gen that overall had good designs

Except regardless of which came first, there’s no reason for a court to assume that a multimillion dollar company would need to steal ideas from a some nobody even if designs happens to be similar since some ideas just inherently more likely to show up, even more so since fakemon makers actively try to use fakemon concepts that would fit with game freak would make. The ideas would have to be near copies for Game Freak to even have a slight chance or losing.
