They made dedicated generals for the move mainly to bait that one for laughter. Overtime it came at the expense of other threads as it spreaded to them. Then during June or July was a big nuke shitshow were the entire reporting queue got flooded with reports for both that lolcow and the ones spamming solar beam stuff to get the attention of the aforementioned lolcow, where they then just cleared out the entire queue with one click and thus nuking EVERY reported post and IP regardless of whether they were rule breaking or not plus 30 day bans for those affected by it. It even reached old day levels where merely posting in those threads got you banned. And that part is where you can imagine that others abused it to get rid of shit they despise.
If you go into the 4bans archive and search for solar beam then you can see that Solar Beam Threads are now being treated as troll posts. That and not wanting to deal with another influx of reports dominating only a single lolcow.
