Black and white anime hair isn't exactly uncommon. It's also just a really fucking nonsense hat design, unless the intention is that it's supposed to be damaged or frayed, why the fuck is it all spiky like that in the first place? It really doesn't help that the spikes aren't even consistently the same size, of course it looks more like hair that way.

I always saw it as a very thin material held up by his hair that due to anime logic retains its spikey shape and pokes out giving the hat a shape. Like a cross between a du-rag and a beanie/tuke but loose on the top and held around the head by the thicker, more elastic headband at its base.

I could be biased, but my country loves white hats while everyone has brown hair here, so subconsciously maybe somehow I was numb to it and didn't assume that he just had white hair.
