Not a "cool feature" but Japan was always getting way better event Pokemon for the longest time (don't know if that still holds true in newer games). I don't think we ever got a shiny Genesect with Blaze Kick, or a V-Create Rayquaza. Kind of annoying.

There's still some technically Japan-only events, yeah. Nowadays it's in the form of single-use serial codes you can only get from Japanese locations, which means you either need a friend over there or have to wait a year or so later for a global equivalent to happen.
