It's not inheard irl for species to evolve smaller brains for energy conservation. Two extreme examples are pandas and koalas - their diets are absolutely fucking miserable sources of energy so they are both stupid and weak. Funfact - Koalas cannot recognize loose euchalyptus leaves as food. If it's not growing on the branch, they have no fucking idea what to do with it.

Other less extreme example is... human. Homo Neanderthalensis was much stronger and had larger brain than Homo Sapiens but needed massive amount of calories provided by large game while Sapiens could thrive on some rabbit, fish and handful of wild plants.
