Fire, for example, was a bad type that only got better as time went on, it gained a resistance to Ice and it was super effective against Steel, the more good Ice, Grass, Bug and Steel types we got the more reason we had to use Fire types to beat them and lastly Fire resists Fairy type attacks.
Speaking of, Fairy is too strong offensively and defensively, but even still, Fairy did exactly what it was made to do, it finally gave us a reliable answer to Dragon types, it made up for Steel losing its Dark resistance by being strong against Dark but weak to Steel and it made Poison better by being weak to and against it.
At worst, Fairy needs to be weak to another existing type and for more of the existing types to resist it.
Saying we need a sound type is like saying we need a slicing type, they're effects applied to moves and abilities like Boom Burst and Sharpness, they're not supposed to be types.
