What puzzle, what would your arena be like?
What badge and TM do you give out?
What's your team and battle music?

Ground type. Sandstorm team laying hazards and other fun stuff for opponents. Gym is set up as a dungeon, where trainers need to send 2 of their 'mon to complete a task designed for teamwork without the trainer's help. If they take too long, they get a trainer battle with what's remaining of their team. Clear 3 tasks/battles and you get to the gym leader. Badge is the Treasure Badge, TM is Secret Power.

Fun idea. Moves that had overworld effects were soulful (including HMs) and integrating that into a gym sounds like a great way to get the player to use them.

That's half of it, yeah. I figure the team would vary depending on challenge level, too.

Maybe a Diglett or Sandile and Trapinch as the 1st badge level, up to a more painful team of Hippodown, Gliscor, Pallosand, Seismitoad, and Garchomp at 8 badges.

Feel like it'd be cool to have Ursaluna or Diggersby to at least get STAB on Secret Power. One of my main complaints, especially for the newer games, is that gym leaders have been showcasing the signature move less and less.

Meeh... I think it's more fun to have gyms built around specific moves even though it's harder to do. For example, here's a late-game mono-Psychic gym built around Trick Room.

Dark-type gym leader, formal and theatrical but not taken in an overly serious way
Gym is a stage - see the path to navigate around stage props under spotlights, then have to retrace it in the dark
Mask badge, TM is a Dark type clone of avalanche
Team: sableye, zwelious, malamar, tera shiinotic (+spiritomb and weavile in rematch)

Flying type, probably gym 4 or 5
Gym is the post office of the city. The puzzle is just one of those connect-the-path switches or whatever themed like mail chutes. Most trainers use regional birds but I swing with the weird ones like Sigilyph/Gligar/fan rotom
