Seeing it from above does make me buy into the theory that they started SwSh on 3DS due to TPC not knowing whether the Switch would take off or not. Really does just look like Sun and Moon, in HD, but even simpler in terms of actual playable, interactable areas.

They were among the first dev teams Nintendo work with to get a Switch devkit in 2015, this was ALWAYS the aim, because Pocket Monsters Series is a deal between Nintendo and Game Freak and existed LONG before TPC were even a consideration (given Nintendo approved Tajiri's "Capsule Monsters" pitch in 1990). The issue was they'd spent their entire dev careers working with potato handhelds, then suddenly found themselves with something a lot more powerful they knew they couldn't handle working with first time out.
They're getting their heads around it, it's never going to be "manchild impressive" tier though, so stop waiting and either move on or cast off your distress. Only way to find the enjoyment in it you desperately seek.

Looks better in the anime. The sports theme for a UK region was just way too on the nose for this game though. Wyndon's name in Japanese is literally Shoot City. As in shooting a goal in football. God they butchered the inspiration.

Game Freak are head of the fucking snake, you dumb little cunt. Whole fucking show moves on their say-so and TPC handles all the non-mainline game development related aspects of the brand, including production of spin offs. They don't have any influence on their owners, either Game Freak or Nintendo and certainly not when Pocket Monsters Series invariably launches in the 3 month period AFTER the kiddy-safe hardware revision hits shop shelves, to get the game into kid hands ASAP. TPC don't see a lick of profit from hardware sales, but Nintendo get both console profits and NSO subs, if parental units agree to signing up for $20 a year as well as Publisher's cut on the game sales itself.

If you play for story, SM is right in the running with BW2 for best, and if you want the gameplay, USUM is tops series wide.

But yeah, XY and ORAS are skippable if you don’t need a team building tool for 3DS multiplayer.

You know that's not how technology works right? Working on stronger machines doesn't necessarily mean that they're more complex or have to use the full extent of a syetem's power.

That's what I look for in Pokemon games above all. Not to mention I don't love the tropical setting, I feel Hoenn did it better. Even if we aren't counting the passersby(also, lol that a DS era game can have several NPCs running around, but a Switch title shits itself if too many Pokemon spawn at once is embarrassing), Castelia City is probably the second or third most populous city based on how many buildings and adjacent areas there are with interactable NPCs
(Another thing that died in the jump to 3D- the number of buildings you could enter has just evaporated)

I am too. The Ohmori games turned me off the franchise completely, and there was definitely a shift in design philosophy when he came on board.
I guess ORAS was...okay, but mostly because it was based on an already great game. I didn't really like any of the new additions, like the Delta Episode, which I think foreshadowed what was to come with SM and so on.
going back a bit further, XY was a flawed game a lot of people would point to that as the beginning of the decline. but for all its flaws, I was still optimistic during XY. it felt like there was still a solid core that could have been salvaged into something good, maybe given some more dev time. but I never felt that way with any of Ohmori's games. they're just abysmal single player experiences that have none of the aspects that made me fall in love with Pokemon. I just don't align with his vision for the franchise at all. I basically draw a line pre- and post- Ohmori

The fact they're listed as owning TPC and as creators and developers of Pocket Monsters Series kid. Never mind the project was greenlit before Iwata was even president of HAL, let alone Nintendo, that they released 4 games before TPC's founding and the fact colo and gale are non-canon like all the other spin offs (if Ishi ran the show, he'd ABSOLUTELY make his shit part of the universe, instead of being irrelevant to the main series). 100%. I'm tired of pretending it's not the case. I've noticed a lot of normalfags wising up to this slowly too which is at least reassuring that I'm not crazy kek. But when I played Legends Arceus late last year my passion for Pokémon was reignited completely. Fucking love that game. So good. Of course it's not perfect by any means but at least to me it had a drop of that signature Pokémon feel that most games since Gen 6 have been lacking in my opinion. I was meh on ORAS too. I like Hoenn but the additions weren't much. Doesn't help I don't like megas either but it was just ok to me at the time. Didn't care for Zinnia or the Delta Episode either. I liked that we had an easy way to catch Deoxys and Raywuaza again but the multidimensional sci-fi story was for me. The games have always had a sci-fi touch but I feel like Ohmori's games just go way overboard. Keep it having sci-fi elements like Bill's transformer and shit, not multiversal stuff.

Felt the same about XY too. It's just ok but had potential to be refined. Sadly it wasn't but the core adventure had some integrity at least. Ohmori's games just don't feel like adventures to me. SM felt like a vacation where you happen to be catching Pokémon. SwSh felt like a sports tournament that happened to have Pokemon in it etc... I just want adventure to be the focus again.

Felt this deeply desu. It sucks because this series is really special to me. I hope he steps down as director some time soon. But i don't think he will since his last game literally broke R/B/G's sales in Japan which is completely unprecedented, let alone for the 2nd games on a console. The 2nd game always sells less than the first. I reckon they'll keep him around at least 1 more gen. I have nothing against him personally but I hope he moves on

yeah I felt the same way about PLA. I know it gets a lot of criticism here but it was the first time I've genuinely enjoyed a Pokemon game for awhile. and it made me realize I still can love Pokemon, I just don't like the direction the main series has gone. you're totally on point about that feeling of adventure. it's what made me fall in love with the series as a kid, and it's totally absent now. the map design is a reflection of that. it's impossible to get immersed in the world of SWSH. Ohmori's focus on character-driven stories instead of atmosphere and adventure just isn't what I want out of these games.

Data already exists showing that 60 to 70% of "Nintendo" fans have another platform.

Except for the gba, RS was 2002, the sp was 2003
And 3ds, XY was 2013, N3ds was 2014
And the Switch, LGPE was 2018, the lite was 2019
And technically the DS since DP was delayed twice.
I guess you could count the game boy color? But that's basically a new system in its own right.

So yeah only the DS had it's first pokemon game release alongside or before due to development issues.

Because Iwao understands competent game design and actually keeps things engaging. When he gets more than a year of dev time he cooks up some tasty shit. And even when he's impaired by shitty schedules he still manages to make the most engaging parts of shitty Ohmori slop.
U-Necrozma and each UB having their own unique environment was kino and Crown Tundra was easily the single best thing in SwSh. Calyrex was actually memorable, meanwhile I can't even remember how the player acquires the weapon dogs.
