as much as it pains me to say it since gen 8 is my favourite gen, I think the legacy these games will always have is "the gen where the community died."
after the dexcut was announced, the community pretty much just imploded in on itself, with it getting more and more hostile and aggressive.

it's completely understandable, but it's honestly a mix of positive feelings surrounding when it came out (went to america with my family and my aunt), the location it's set in (born in the UK), as well as the mixture of open world and linear that felt grand. that, alongside the giant dex of absolute goobers, the setting as a whole, and the loveable characters, made it my favourite. I also think PLA perfected the open world formula for pokemon, so that's another reason on why.

..oh, and BDSP brought the underground to my switch, so that's quite nice.

NTA but that's weird because I'm from the UK BUT I do dislike the game because of that. It just feels super stereotypical and reductive and I feel like the rich history of this country really was not reflected at all. They just boiled it down to football and tea. That's it. But that's just my opinion. I'm glad you liked it though, always love to hear nice stories.

PLA I 100% agree with though, love that game to bits.

Fair enough. I really didn't enjoy it that much and finished it more as a chore than something I enjoyed. I didn't like that animations were still not even up to the standards of Pokemon Stadium and the map didn't look very detailed at all. Think I just expected a lot more when GameFreak made the mainline switch to a home console... The open world sections were nice though.

I really enjoyed PLA as well, not perfect but something new and fresh. The kinda game I would've played to death as a kid during gen 3.

I did not buy BDSP out of principal, there was absolutely no reason to exclude Platinum features.

I mean there's so much they could have done and we could have had a post game wild area in Ireland but no, they absolutely squandered the folklore and the potential for original ideas, I mean, they already abandoned the idea of Gyms in gen 7 so just go the whole hog with 8 and have each "gym" be a short doubles tournament or something with your rivals popping up as partner options or something.

It never existed. Since they announced he dexcut in G3, every board started hating every detail about the game. Even Reddit was basically /vp/
And then it became the highest selling Pokémon games after RB, showing GF they didn’t need to worry about how their fans reacted anymore

Honestly I remembered being pretty excited about an actual Main Series Pokémon game on a home console. And then Dexit happened and instantly killed any hype I had.

The darkest age of Pokémon (which is a title shared with BDSP). The ultimate litmus test to see how much Pokémon fans will accept cuts before it gets overwhelming. Truly, a Pokémon game released in 2019.

It was more just leftover hype that people bought into from Nintendo marketing the Switch really, but extended to include Pokémon. A lot of Nintendo fans operate on huge "what ifs" about future games and Pokémon fans are no exception (saying this as a huge Nintendo and Pokémon fan)

As much as I love the gameplay and the Akari porn, to call it the definitive pokemon game is sour grapes at best. It is a good pokemon game but it is by no means a good game, let alone anywhere near the level of quality of other switch games.

I mean, that's a very small group of games as it is. It's just final fantasy, DQ and persona and except for FF the rest were dippong their toes into portables until the switch happened erasing the distinction between home and portable consoles.

You know, I was going to say that KH counts but they literally only have three home console entries, 4 if you count that rythym game. Everything else is a portable game.

I don't know. I guess the gigantamax thing and maybe porn. It is technically the last of the mainline games to date to promote sexy girls. Also the dexcut sucked abd the Bogdanoffs being in the game was funny as fuck.

I remember how the pokemon were still a mystery and there were debates over Corviknight being a single stage or a final stage of 3. I remember how everyone loved the starters for their strong impressionable debut and there were factions like Grookey Gang, Sobble Squad and Scorbunny Squad. Probably for introducing Dexit and being yet another turning point people can point to for "ruining" pokemon, i dunno. Maybe in another 10 years the people who grew up with it will successfully repair its rep with (Chairman) rose-tinted glasses.

I saw your thread and told myself to come up with a "first thing you think of" phrase, and my immediate reply to myself was "mobile game sloppa". Mobile Pokemon games after Go receive the resources and time they need to accomplish the goals they plan for. The console games are denied this standard because they are just foundations for the rest of the franchise and need to exist so other projects can be released regardless of how completed they are. The first trailer for Gen 8 showed the starters and the wolves as a 3D animation because the games were and are terribly optimized. None of this matters because the Switch allowed HD Nintendo games on hardware that wasn't as cumbersome as the Wii U and the huge install base of the Switch paired with people wanting to try standard new Pokemon for the first time resulted in big sales numbers that doomed the mainline games forever.

These games exemplified how shallow exploration in these games have gotten. It was already bad with gen 7 islands feeling like little virtual theme parks of nothing. Hisui and Area Zero were decent improvements atleast.
