>>57026705 To an extent I agree. I don't really have an upper limit on the amount of difficulty to overcome an obstacle that I enjoy if it's well enough designed. My issue is most of the methods these "designers" use to create challenge is exceptionally uninspired and is based around the premise that the player will have both the best possible team for any given fight as well as the best possible RNG for any given fight via infinite repetitions until they win. This creates fights that, no matter how obtuse finding the "winning line" through them is, is ultimately still a trial and error exercise with unlimited resources (on a macro scale, being both attempts and access to all the previous pokemon the game has given you access to thus far) given enough time. The game fundamentally assumes your time isn't valuable and doesn't actually test other skills than preparation, no matter how input read-y the AI is because it still (largely) follows the same path in any situation with minimal variance leaving improvisation and on-the-fly adaptation entirely out of the game. Edge of Eternity was really onto to something by making the Sageniggers have a pool of 8 or so possible mons and randomize which ones and the order they appear in on each attempt. A combination of that and an AI that sometimes chooses the 2nd best option in any given situation (provided the variance between the best and 2nd best is within a certain delta) would also go a long way to make fights less trial-and-error scriptfests. Clover's AI is, as far as memory goes, still the shining paragon of what the AI in a "hard pokemon game" should or shouldn't be doing.

>>57027379 thanks bro. and beautifully put
>>57026705 and one more thing i will say, i did miss this earlier, is that the end of the day a lot of these games just are not that actually difficult.
ashime basically said this, like i'm not being tested on anything other than just sheer patience and how much i can exploit minor flaws in the AI to eventually come to a win. all i'm doing for all of these fights is just repeating the same repetitive 5-6 first turns and slowly chipping away until i find the right counter or the right AI exploit that i find acceptable. it's not 'difficult' to find these things, it's just kind of random and/or extremely obvious based on the nature of the fight. it also doesn't help that for a lot of these kaizoshit hacks you have to slowly find out what the AI even has in terms of items, pokemon, abilities, moves, etc. which just slowly drag up the playtime so you can establish what counters/mons are viable, and all that happens as you go along is the pool of viable shit shrinks to nothing
it's a great paradox, that when you rocket the difficulty to these kinds of levels you produce gameplay that's...unironically kind of easy just because the way i have to play ends up being so careful and controlled.
and if they're not that hard, they're not interesting, they don't introduce any new ideas, and they're leeching off existent games and just making them strictly worse, why the fuck do they even exist. you bring up wizardry but man wizardry is literally the genesis of modern rpgs, sure it may not be the most balanced thing but it has merit on that alone. mods like this are completely and utterly pointless

>leveling method haha...well, how leveling works is that if you defeat a pokemon with lower level, you gain 0 exp, but if you beat a pokemon at or above your level it gives some
so, how it works is that for things like gyms, if you find them too difficult you're encouraged to fight the gym and lose over and over to slowly level grind one above the gym's mons (gym leaders usually having a team of level X pokemon with their ace at level X + 1). this also applies for rivals/other bosses as well, even if it's annoying as fuck to walk the distance back to try again
the grunts during the hell section game over you so you can't take advantage of this there (and so the final evil team leader has 1-2 levels over you), and the final gym hardcaps at you level 61
basically how it worked in urmumium, but a bit more faggoty, as is the usual

>>57027379 It's been a while since I talked here but I do read, and mate. No.
Your solution is add more RNG? We already had fangames in the past try the random Pokémon thing to teams.
You know what that caused? More soft resets.
Your solution of adding 6-8 Pokémon for the Bosses to choose from AND having the AI sometimes randomly choose the second best move is not going to make the player adapt like you think it will, it simply makes my finger press F12 quicker, and I don't even care that much for difficulty. But that idea of a solution you gave just isn't it. You just made fights longer.
Just gotta accept Pokémon combat will eventually always end up on doing something, checking if it works, if not, reset and try something else.
Fuck I remember beating Cynthia in Gen 4 that way because I refused to go through the E4 again, I spent over an hour just resetting and trying moves in a specific order to force the AI to obey me and so I could predict what it would do. And Gen 4 isn't even hard, imagine that in a game that wants difficulty.
Btw why does it take me over 800s to post something holy fuck I hate this.
Back to working on things.

>>57027379 >>57027453 Thank you for the detailed replies. I want to preface by saying that I have no rapidash in this race; I have no interest in playing kaizo hacks of these games. I wanted to clarify what I said earlier, because the other anon was wondering why people make these or why people might find these fun, and I want to provide some insight.
(1) On a personal enjoyment level, I would point to Wizardry IV as an example of a game where the tedium creates fun for players. One part of the game involves a labyrinth with numerous unmarked teleports and one-way walls. Not only does one need to navigate this maze, but one also needs to map out the maze, because mapping out the maze will turn out to reveal letters embedded throughout each of the multiple levels which one will require far later in the game. The game never suggests that one has to map out the maze, nor does it reveal the existence of one-way walls, teleports, etc. to the player. This maze coexists with the game's combat system, which stacks things far against the player, limiting the player's ability to simply go 'round and 'round. Mapping it requires hours of tedious, frustrating effort, much of which will go towards making no progress whatsoever until the player has comprehended some of the individual tricks such as the unmarked teleports or the one-way doors. Even once the player comprehends the tricks involved, figuring out when one teleports doesn't come easily: did I just teleport or does it look different because I went through a one-way wall? etc.
Yes, people playing it nowadays can simply look up a guide. But the game was originally designed to be played without a guide. Many people, including myself, have played it in its original intent and found that fun. (cont)
Anonymous
>>57029185 Do I think that this is Fair or Good Game Design? Not necessarily. Every component of the design appears geared to waste the player's time and to confound, frustrate, and irritate the player. Why do I find it fun? It's hard to put it into words, but slowly trying it over and over, gradually learning the rules of trickery through trial and error experimentation, and figuring out manners of navigating this hellish landscape and mitigating the rng give me a rush like no other. I do not believe that enjoying these games makes me smarter, better, more hardcore, whatever than other people. I just do enjoy them and find them fun, and I think there's merit to their existence for that alone. Just because most people make fun of Wizardry IV as one of the meanest games ever created doesn't take away what I and others enjoyed about it. It is completely fine for a game to be niche and inaccessible.
(2) Both of you brought up the points that the non-random layout of the team and the AI make it a slow trial and error experience. Yet kaizo games by their nature, from their inception, make the use of such mechanics. The original Kaizo Mario World hacks and games such as I Wanna Be The Guy rely on hidden blocks, forced glitches, sudden changes to the layout, and so on. The opening screen of I Wanna Be the Guy gives a good example: one learns by trial and error which apples will fall, where the hidden blocks appear, that the apples will subsequently fall upwards, and that not all of the apples will fall upwards. One could not possibly make these determinations without failing the level repeatedly by trial and error, steadily inching through the level design and developing a route. One could liken these to the appeal of speedrunning non-kaizo games. (cont)
Anonymous
>>57029189 Take a game like Metroid, for instance. The rewards for completing the game under different times encourage one to play it repeatedly, gradually routing more and more efficient ways of getting through the game in addition to encouraging the skills required to beat bosses with fewer missiles or less health. I do not see the issue of "this game is unfair, and the challenge is in tedious trial and error" as a bug, but a feature. Kaizo hacks in their purest form are intended to be trial and error challenges combining skill, memorization, and routing. That does not mean that everyone has to enjoy such hacks or that people need to find them fun. But it also does not mean that no one finds them fun.
(3) A fixed enemy team with fairly fixed and exploitable AI requires a different although related set of skills compared to, say, Showdown. Randomized teams or unusual AI that includes elements of RNG can make the fights more fun or interesting for some people! I am working on a fangame of sorts myself right now (not a kaizo or difficulty hack) which includes rival battles and Gym leaders that use variable teams for this exact reason. But not everyone likes this type of challenge. Learning the exact abilities, moves, and capabilities of a team, then how to manipulate the AI, constitutes a different kind of challenge that other people may like better. It also cuts down on the amount of restarting a fight to try to get the perfect team for your particular strategy. The final kaizo hack does have a great deal of restarting too, especially with how move rng works, but at least one has an expected team that one can counterbuild. For myself personally, I prefer the challenge of having to design a team that can stand up to a variety of different builds, rather than one that requires significantly trial and error and particular counterbuilding. But I can understand the joy of building that specific perfect counter and finding that ideal path through the AI. (cont)
Anonymous
>>57029194 (4) I do not mean to defend the specific design decisions in this particular hack. Tedious by design does not mean that every tedious design decision is a good one. I am only seeking to answer the question of, Does anyone find this fun? The answer is yes. I have not been on whatever discord you all keep posting screenshots from, but I do not think that those people are making up the fact that they are having fun or that they are enjoying this. Again, it is perfectly fine for a game to be niche or inaccessible to most players. I find it enjoyable to read the analyses of why the battles are challenging and the strategies required to defeat them, which is why I was reading through the thread. Thanks for reading. /blog

>>57029145 This issue was already solved by the Stadium games as well as every fangame that utilizes boss gauntlets without saving; by having your team be tested by more than 1 boss at a time (or even just regular trainers) or by increasing the iteration time slightly from last save to runback in any way, you greatly disincentivize the player frivolously F12ing for their ideal RNG or path through a fight and create a stronger incentive for them to teambuild for consistency and general use rather than for "silver bullets" of extreme specialists who do a specific job against each of the boss' mons. You could even make the argument that this was the initial intention of the Elite Four+Champion structure and letting players save in between each fight was a concession to keep the game accessible to kids. I'm obviously not saying that every fight should be a gauntlet or require absurd runback to try again, but there's far more systems at play here in the designer's toolbox that they could be utilizing to create difficulty than just create scripted fights.
None of the individual Frontier Brains are particularly hard as single fights, yet getting their Gold Symbols is, by most people's metric, some of the hardest tasks in mainline games because the devs used a variety of techniques to raise the difficulty of the frontier and encourage very different types of teambuilding (although whether or not the gimmick rulesets of any given facility is good or not is entirely a different matter).

>>57029185 >>57029189 >>57029194 >>57029197 >Wizardry I've not played Wizardry so I can't comment, but I do think it's only partially applicable as a comparison from what you're describing as grinding out a hard pokemon fight tends to have 2 layers of tedium. The first being catching a team you think will work/EVtraining/IVbreeding/leveling them and the second being working out your "script" for the fight itself. I general think obfuscation of information is one of the softest forms of difficulty, but playing around with the denial of information is a perfectly valid design technique depending on the experience the developer is trying to create.
>Kaizo World and I Wanna Be The Guy definitely do have trial and error in them (far more the latter; the former's trial and error elements are way less prevalent than popular memes suggest) but context is still important; the games inherently have a higher execution barrier than a pokemon game would and in the case of I Wanna Be The Guy (on Hard/default difficulty), most of the gag-kills come right after a section of only middling difficulty, forcing you to gain consistency there (with exceptions like the Spike Corridor being so memorable because they're exceptions to the rule) and overall having a far lower runback time to try again than most games by virtue of being a platformer. I don't think this specific type of design to force consistency necessarily works for pokemon just due to pacing differences between the genres, but that hasn't been for lack of trying; Floral Tempus EX has a section towards the end where you have to beat the main villain 4 times in a row because in-universe he's resetting time and trying to beat you again in a different timeline. 1/2

>>57029537 >Kaizo definition argument It really comes down to what you define Kaizo as, but I've played a lot of games that don't fall under that definition that I'd easily classify as harder yet others that aren't "kaizo difficulty" that execute the mechanical elements of a kaizo game better.
An easy example of the latter is the puzzle battles in Pokemon Salt & Shadow (formerly Perish Song). These fights mog 99% of hyper precise option limiting kaizo games by not giving you pretenses of mon choice nor obfuscating what the "correct" setup is and leave it to you to work out how to assemble the pieces of the puzzle you have. I suspect a lot of current kaizo designers will eventually come to the conclusion that an entire game full of this specific implementation is what they're trying to create with enough introspection on the design (looking at LAWDS in particular here).
>Teambuilding I'm of the belief that generalist teambuilding and adapting on the fly is the crux of what pokemon is on pretty much every level outside of fangames. In a casual playthrough you take your 6 niggas and don't really swap around much outside of liking a new mon you caught. In competitive you tend to pick a team you think will have the best chances against all of the other archetypes of teams in the metagame and is best able to answer specific threats while posing your own in the process while also accepting that pokemon is inherently a game with high variance built into every facet of it. It's only in fangames or romhacks where the dynamic of the player having unlimited tries and only needs to beat a specific boss once does this model get distorted and you start getting stuff like the LAWDS changelog screencaps because they're trying to brute force the mechanics of Pokemon to fit a paradigm it's poorly suited for at worst or requires heavy modification to core mechanics (beyond individual moves/abilities etc, changing the way fights work entirely) to accommodate at best.

>>57029571 No, my argument is that while these specific elements of the game can produce fun and I can see what parts of it people like, I think there's far better ways to create the gameplay loop they're looking for than any kaizo hack/fangame we've played in these threads.
I'm arguing against the implementation of the current field of kaizo games trying to force a square peg into a triangle hole mechanically when there's a perfectly suitable square hole for it.

I personally think that the moment the developer adopts an adversarial mindset against their players in the way Wingdings clearly has the resulting game is doomed to failure, but obviously LAWDS is not the entire genre.

>>57029571 >>57029566 >>57029197 Truthfully, honestly, when you get past a lot of this I really don't think it's as worth as scrutiny as you guys are making it out
The obvious reason is that a lot of retards think the kaizogames are 'hard', and by beating and showing off recordings of their accomplishments they feel validated in the eyes of their tiny community. I really don't think a lot of them find this actually fun kek. It's the same reason why Rejuv Intense got removed in the first place, it's always the simplest reason, elitism
This is why I emphatically repeat that game design at this level is not 'difficult', it really is just tedious, and that other experiences like, I dunno, Clover or Odyssey, are in actuality a lot more organically and naturally difficult if you're not just poring over trainer documentation.
>>57029145 I think it's moreso in line with "the enemy should not be hyperbuffed to such extreme levels" so the fight feels more organic back and forth rather than just a scriptfest. You can still account for any given mon in the pool but in a way that lets multiple things be viable
I mean SS2 did its own random team generator even the usual urmumium crowd I remember distinctly bitching about it (especially on top of the harder difficulty modes increasing bad RNG for the player) so yeah we're aware what the limitations of that are kek.

>>57029613 What makes Clover and Odyssey hard to you? As in, what do you think contribute to their organic difficulty?
Anonymous
>>57029613 I'm sure some people are just waving their epeens when they win, like Dark Souls PC players back in the day, but there are others who like it for real. Look up I Wanna Be Maker on Steam for examples of other vibrant kaizo communities. You may argue that it's different because it's a platformer and not turn based, but I assure you that there are people who unironically ENJOY these games. Just because it isn't enjoyable for you doesn't mean that nobody on the planet likes it. I think Gholdengo is one of the ugliest pokémon of all time but many people love it. Even though some people like being special snowflakes who like unpopular pokémon simply because they're unpopular, many other clearly sincerely love it. I don't think they're all faking it.

>>57029650 that's fair, but I think the group of people who unironically enjoy these mods is so small that they could be disregarded
That, and the fact that they frequently get drowned out by underageb& kaizoniggers that take the worst behavior possible from these projects and use it to infect other games and bring them down means that whatever microscopic amount of legitimate goodwill there is is moot.
Also, you keep referring to other games, but man, other games, original IPs usually have a lot more offer besides their difficulty. I Wanna Maker is a free extremely well made level editor that allows for all the wackiness and the funny kaizo traps from IWBTG and you do need some skill to perform techniques in platforming. I can walk you through how I did
>>57027143 but there really wasn't a lot of skill involved. Mods like this, specifically Urmumium, SLLDE, and Madame Moto, offer NOTHING beyond their slog gameplay that's ultimately not even mechanically difficult kek. If they were their own unique game instead of leeching off an established fangame (also often without the creator's own permission) I'd be considerably less harsh on them
>>57029635 It's really nothing serious. A competent AI, well made enemy teams with strong movesets, maybe an overarching battle strategy like sand or rain that has to be accounted for, etc.
The reason I say they're 'harder' than shit like the kaizoshart games is because I don't feel the need to run a script and retry a battle 100000000 times to get the AI to act in the most optimal way possible or just carefully assemble specific counterteams to get past an obstacle. The less overtuned enemies incentivize working with what you have and planning/reacting on the fly rather than just constructing a boring simulation where you can never possibly lose

>>57029692 It's that, and I assume just size is also a factor. Any site/forum/chatroom that grows to the size of Reborncord is eventually going to have minor subgroups of retards that can flourish since they start banding together, and then you get enough of those that the overall quality of the group as a whole comes down. The kaizoniggers for what it's worth are not even remotely the worst part of 'borncord, that would be #rejuv-general
The kaizofags on Reborn I think probably started out fine, then as the quality of the 'cord decreased they just started one upping each other until you get the unrecognizable disasters that are shit like

>>57029758 to start that opening where bulker hammer arms the mega fevesta i found this out just by chance and very quickly. i noticed when bulker was out the ai liked to target the other slot, so i knew i'd want a protect mon there. i also needed a pokemon that didn't make the fevesta use sludge wave. i also burned a few attempts on figuring out how to make bulker kill the fevesta in one hit (hammer arm + black belt + adamant) eventually i settled on mystablet because it was the optimal way for the AI to act. note i also had to burn quite a few attempts to get up to level 61 in the first place since i started the fight at level 60.
next i also noticed the AI for whatever reason the ai loved to send out a ground-weak pokemon to replace fevesta, markrush or salaslam, so i put EQ on bulker. then i put a storm drain mon on to absorb water moves that i could swap into from mystablet.
for a while then i tried out different strategies that let hydrogon die to salaslam/silvicious while bulker landed another EQ to kill them. the problem is that nothing really worked mostly because the terravolt would come in and start spamming screens. i only access to 3 brick break mons with none of them being particularly good for later in the fight. it was also around this time i realized beautifin and mega smaqua were just impossibly fucking bulky retards that would require nothing short of an electric terrain boosted thunder to kill, and i couldn't have light screen up for when it did.
eventually i figured a better line would be to swap hydrogon back to mystablet to let it die, i tested a few more options here what to send in. the turning point of the entire battle is when i realized when i sent out my own silvicious the AI would send out beautifin and terravolt, and then markrush after terravolt. this makes no fucking sense because as you can see in the vid the silvicious kills both terravolt and markrush easily and the beautifin has terrible targeting as well.

Wagie !!jFV8SjIrokx
>>57029831 >>57029758 it should have sent out one of its fighting types, or baabreeze with priority sky attacks, or whatever. this is what i mean by the battle less requiring skill and more just finding the key mon that causes the AI to behave like an absolute retard.
after that, the battle was pretty much won. i just had to figure out what the AI was doing each turn so I could optimally plan out a path through it. i swap in rushot on the same turn markrush dies so i can have rushot and terravolt at the same time for the e-terrain thunders. the smaqua also has just terrible AI and does not go for priority when it should, it was using rock slide, so i reset and thunder it first to kill. the beautifin goes for a water move, i reset then swap to hydrogon. the dracofly kills hydrogon to get its moxie boost and becomes very annoying afterwards, so i reset and swap to bulker to eat the hit.
my terravolt has defeatist, so i reset and roost to get back my hp to hit hard for later in the battle.
the baabreeze comes out and targets terravolt if i send in rushot, that leaves terravolt in defeatist range, so i reset and send in hydrogon instead to have sky attack target it instead.
the bulker comes out and parabolic charge puts me just above defeatist range. i thought rushot would have done more damage with electric gem crackle slam, but even then if i hadn't got the flinch i would have just reset and put covet on it or something to remove its assault vest (i assume that's what it had, otherwise i don't know how it had so much special bulk).
---
so yeah. bottom line is, i didn't really require some exceptional game knowledge, i just had to figure the one breaking point for the AI where it inexplicably did something good for me and then after that it was just a bunch of slow resets until my scripting worked in an optimal way to let me win. also having to avoid the various shitty RNG of course.

killing Lucius and sexoing Artica >last times I tried fighting the final boss the AI kept going for lugia Yeah, it's either really easy or really hard because sometimes Kyogre randomly hard focuses either (you) or lugia at times

>>57030425 Hey Musk. I have over about a year compiled some Pokemon Wack info into a spreadsheet. Mainly because I didn't like clicking around the wiki from page to page. This spreadsheet does several things:
>maps >showcase levels and teams of major trainer battles (especially post E4 stuff) >one separate sheet of just gyms for nuzlocke level caps >Full Pokegirl Island encounter table >A dex of pokemon I'd catch for... personal... reasons... Funny enough I haven't played Wack. I just used LegnaK's playthrough on Youtube and a couple other ones. I do not have Kanto E4 or Wack's PWT or Battle Frontier info.
Over the past couple of days I decided to open up a new laptop (because my current one is downstairs with a broken hinge for the screen and I need a bed laptop because I'm currently sick.) I spent yesterday making Windows 10 usable. (This new laptop needed to be formatted and also basic user setting have too much crap to deal with and I needed to download essential programs.)
This link will download the spreadsheet as an excel file. Not sure if you're playing blind, but if you want info, have a lot of it!

It's literally just all the locations names in the order you visit them.
https://pokemonwack.fandom.com/wiki/Wackthrough Will you be doing post-game? It's LONG and frankly doesn't feel like post-game but just a bunch more story.

I've completely forgotten who any of these characters are, honestly I'm not even sure if any of them have been properly introduced yet or if this is the first time they appear Also I've completely forgotten (and did not note down) if I actually went back and combed every single previous body of water for those nearly invisible frost walker flowers so I suppose I will once again be backtracking through the entire fucking world map

goofy ahh house from ohio
>>57030507 I've played the game before, furthest I got across my various playthroughs was victory road before I softlocked because during upgrade cave I got cocky and tried turning on insanity mode mid-run which broke stuff and probably also broke stuff when I turned it back off

>>57030544 I think touching shit I shouldn't have caused some events involving trainers to spaz out and get me in a loop of the game making me have to create teams for trainers with "missing" teams that the game was trying to grab but didn't exist, which would open up a list of all pokemon which would take long enough for the "a script is taking too long, the game will now restart" failsafe to trigger because as decent as my old PC was it wasn't enough
but now my current PC is actually able to load the game's pokemon list in the debug menu in time

>>57030533 There's barely anything, trust me, I combed the map from top to bottom, in fact there's areas that were blatantly unfinished or areas with broken cutscene triggers that I think STILL haven't been fixed or worked on, because Ayrei is just that fucking competent.
>>57030613 I don't know if there is, I wasn't around /vp/ when Clover saw most of it's work being done. I think the romhack/fangame making thread might be able to give you pointers in that direction, I do know it's fairly advanced as far as romhacks are concerned and honestly it's a work of art to someone like me who is just starting the slow walk into becoming a code wizard.
