I guess it doesn't matter much since most players won't encounter it, but why did they decide to nerf Mirage Island in the final game?

Limitations, probably. It was their first entry on the GBA, and game pitches often have big lofty plans at the start that have to be worn down as development progresses. There's no excuse for it being so damn rare, though.

Replaying Hoenn through all these hacks recently... I almost wish Mirage Island wasn't a mirage at all, if only to break up some of the monotony of Hoenn's water half. Different tilesets, overworld mons, more five bombs and interesting secrets, something man. Maybe IGN was onto something.

I would have loved to have dive back for SV and been able to explore like taped off beach areas with coral/seaweed shit. Would have been great, been itching for that since BotW for Open World Nintendo.

What the fuck, it's Cinnabar all over again. I can at least rationalise removing the caves to save space but getting rid of the windy staircase and the waterfall is psychotic. Who keeps deciding to spend man-hours on boringifying islands?
