It's weird how Gym Leaders in the anime don't seem to know each other already. In the games they hang out during free time.

Gym leaders weren't portrayed as having social lives until GSC. In RBY they exist exclusively in their gyms, say nothing about their outside lives, and are only commented on by third parties in relation to their battling skill. the early anime assumed they were strangers because that's how they were presented in-game.
