FF6 is probably the most in depth story of FF without getting into retarded territory but 1 to 5 is basic, as much as Iike 3 it's probably the worst of the lot because of how xande, CoD and the dark world basically come out of fucking nowhere in the last 2 hours of the game.
SMT isn't particularly difficult if you just know how to read, the hardest part is probably demon negotiation since it's rng.
Story is a difficult thing to judge since they have multiple endings but the worst game in that regard is 5 as much as I like the game since it's just everything has already gone to shit, be the first to reset the world. You don't know shit about your allies and the final boss doesn't really change much on either path.
And I've never played the battle network games but if it's anything like the anime for it then it's just flat out retarded with mega man and Lan being biological brothers and they eventually matrix evolve Digimon style.
So yeah, good jrpg stories are hard to come by.
