Humans function by associating ideas, by making mental links. So it's quite the opposite: the more we know, the “easier” it is to know new things by relating them to what we already know.
That's why it's easy to remember a small fucking detail linked to one of our hobbies, something we already know well ("Oh yes, this is the CZW-16, not the 15, look, the edge are a bit smaller here"), but have trouble remembering our neighbor's first name.
