if it's a, ask Smogon's Univershity, I don't have time to reiterate (or argue) what a 'shitmon' is.
if it's b, you can (and have to) battle with Magikarp in this game. In the main RPGs, you have Magikarp out only to gain EXP before swapping out until it turns int Gyarados. Or? You just go catch Gyarados.
This game lets you use unevolved pokemon into the late game, so you can channel your inner anime protagonist and just use pokemon that you like. The game is, like the mainline RPGs, not that hard. But unlike the mainline RPGs, the EXP system and access to rare candies ensures that you are always stronger than wild pokemon, and battles fall into two categories, challenges and puzzles.
Puzzles are late-game, like aforementioned Magikarp battling. Challenges are your boss fights, where you can augment your pokemon for niches that they just can't carve out in the mainline games.
