yes yes, and misty wields a cross in Indigo League too, we've heard it all before. Here's the best answer you'll ever get to this question. Pokemon isn't real life and christian iconography is popular in Japan which is why we have shit like Castlevania. Nobody over there is caught up in the logistics, it's literally just for fun and entertainment's sake.

Christianity was also the religion in the Zelda series before it was retconned into the three Goddesses, there's even official art of Link praying to Jesus. That's also why there was a cross on Link's shield and the Book of Magic was just the Bible in the Japanese version.
