There's a renaissance for edginess in children's franchises as of late, which makes me wonder: What's the edgiest Pokemon gen?

5th gen has a game where a cult of Pokemon that hate life and want to die travel around the world killing humans and worship an eldritch abomination of pure despair. They then kill the incarnated form of God and try to kill the player. Eventually the player is able to destroy the abomination and save everyone from their own suicidal despair.

Don't forget him, even though he came 4 gens later.

Now that I think about it, the period from Gen 4 to 6 (Maybe even 7) was a pretty edgy time for Pokémon.

I would disagree with this because to me edginess is an aesthetic of things trying to look more dark and mature than they really are, and SM is the opposite, it has some mature subtext but the presentation of it is completely sanitized.

I would give it to Gen 4 or 5, that was probably the peak of Pokemon trying to look "cool", and Cyrus and Ghetsis are the edgiest villains in the franchise

Yep. Kyurem freezes Hydreigon, then smashes him into tiny pieces. He gets better later cause of what he is, but for a while he was actually dead.
In Super Dark Matter uses Yveltal's power to kill numerous Pokemon, including Arceus.

I personally feel like it's Gen 5. You even have a rival with a tragic backstory, that's being used by the main villain, gets stronger than you at some point and looks similar to you.
