Ice type was unironically top 3 in the first generation
>resists itself while not being weak to electric
>immunity to freeze (frozen pokemon can't thaw in this generation unless they're hit by a fire move other than fire spin, but lol at the prospect of using fire moves competitively)
>blizzard is absolutely busted because it has 120 power and 90 accuracy (stab blizzard from articuno is so ridiculously strong, it's a guaranteed 2 hit on tauros and a guaranteed 3 hit on snorlax)
>strong against ground, flying and grass, which makes it great in terms of coverage (and dragon too, but that's really not that important)
>only resisted by water and itself (and waters aren't immune to freeze unless they're also ice)
>weaknesses to fire and fighting, which suck ass, and rock, which is usually paired with ground, so rocks (which are slow btw) are death fodder to stab ice moves anyway
>stealth rocks don't exist
>fire not resisting ice back then is not even worty mentioning because of how bad fire was on the first place
Ice was raped into the ground so bad, many newer players don't realize how good it was back then

>the freeze status was nerfed from a practical insta-kill, now you have a 10% to thaw by yourself each turn (and also using sacred fire thaws you out I guess)

>steel types can actually use their stab moves offensively in a competitive setting, which is obviously bad
>fighting types are amazing now
>the freeze status got nerfed AGAIN (now you get a 20% chance to thaw)

That was the final nail in the coffin for ice's defensive prowess, but the relentless nerfing started since gold and silver
