I don’t have any New Year’s resolution. I have never had one and am not open to changing that. I have never actually set a meaningful goal for myself, or if I did, I certainly gave up on it. I feel like setting a “goal” somehow makes it less likely that I do something. I guess the closest thing I have to a “resolution” is that, once I finish Black Blaze, I’m done with setting deadlines and just going about things as “it’s done when it’s done”. Guess that includes artwork, if I don’t give up on that.

My new year's resolution is something I already talked about: finishing my associate's degree. Otherwise, I don't have anything I'm particularly planning on doing different this year.

As for Amanda, I imagine she's proactive enough to start making changes as soon as she realizes she has to, rather than waiting until a specific day.

It's been too long since I got to sit down and discuss Pokemon biology. Let's talk about Friendship evolutions.
At a layman's glance, the idea of quantifying the power of friendship to induce Evolution is kind of absurd compared to exposure to radiation from stones or absorbing energy fired off by Moves in battle, but surprisingly the premise is rooted in real world biology.
I mentioned oxytocin in a previous, unrelated post--the love hormone that rewards the body for social interaction and bonding. For infant humans and juvenile social animals, releasing oxytocin as a result of physical loving plays a vital role in regulating the flow of healthy growth hormones. Without this steady flow of oxytocin, the developing body switches into panic mode, "the protector(s) is dead," and starts pumping out cortisol as a response. This causes stunted growth and, paradoxically, premature growth as well. Put simply, it causes the body to grow wrong. In humans, it causes a well-recorded phenomenon called "failure to thrive" in which even a body that has all its base needs provided for will still induce marasmus and waste away because of a lack of physical contact. In pack animals, this causes their bodies to speed through development to reach reproductive age early at the cost of physical and mental longevity--in coyotes, the absence of a parental figure to dote on a juvenile causes them to become sexually active at six months of age instead of the standard twelve months. Yet another reason to advocate for total coyote death.
Anyways.
While marasmus was probably the furthest thing from Gamufreaku's mind when designing friendship evolutions, it is worth noting how much it overlaps with baby Pokemon and taking unlovable or antisocial Pokemon like Zubat and Chansey respectively and skyrocketing their power level.
So it really isn't at all Farfetch'd to say that doting on your Pokemon would stimulate their growth both physically and mentally in order to grow stronger.

Now here’s a fun fact that you’re probably aware of but that the others aren’t. Oxytocin production can result just from touch. A funny observation that actually brings this topic full-circle.
In the absence of oxytocin, the body produces cortisol (stress hormone) and adrenaline (adrenaline hormone). Overexposure to these chemicals causes the cells in the body to begin aging prematurely through a process called oxidative stress. This, too, has the effect of creating growth defects. In this case, your body's DNA ages prematurely, causing--among other issues--the muscle mass around your stomach to begin to break down and the cortisol encourages your body to start bulking up fat in preparation for having to go into survival mode. After all, in the absence of a caregiver, the body assumes food is going to be scarce.
The moral of all of this is to pet your Pokemon and pet them often. Depriving them of that enrichment is kneecapping their potential.
Now that we've established the benefits of physical bonding, we can now properly differentiate between friendship bonuses and the affection bonuses from Mon Amie, Refresh, etc.
It's just physical upkeep versus mental upkeep. Pay close attention to the text and you'll notice all the benefits from Refreshmie are rooted in willpower.

Midge update: had her first quest, was kinda mid, Definitely not what I was expecting. I got to do everything I wanted, status conditions, got the boss Stuck and Trapped, but the whole thing felt lacking. The GM had a battle with another player lined up for after and it seemed like they were trying to speed through the whole thing to get to that. I definitely felt ignored at times, not that I want to be catered to, but the only time anyone acknowledged anything I said was either the GM on my turn or when I would do something to benefit them directly. Not to mention the format they use to play is pants on head retarded. They open roll20 and use it as a map only and then do the whole thing through a dice rolling bot in discord. Wasn't a horrible experience, but not one I would rank favorably or be excited to do.

The quest itself was interesting in concept. We had to go fight a rampaging boss duo of Gardevoir and Gallade with their Kirlia children. Interesting concept, but I didn't like how simplistic it ran in practice. Maybe this style of game just isn't for me. I'll do a gym battle and see if I have more fun. Perhaps I just didn't jive with that one GM.

It didn't feel targeted, there was another new player there that was also ignored. I think its far more likely they just have a clique I'm not a part of yet and will just need to interact more for them to feel comfortable with me. One thing that stood out to me was that they seemed to get real confused when I asked if I could roll dice and do damage calculations in Roll20 rather than the discord dice roller because it was easier. The GM didn't know what i was talking about. Which is really my biggest gripe. They're allowed to be weird nerds who don't know how to socialize with people outside of their niche of a niche, but their biggest transgression was making a game I play to have fun, not fun. Again, perhaps it was just that GM's style I disagree with. Maybe West March games aren't actually my thing.

That's a difficult thought to think if Nosepass would ever evolve that far on the team. The movepool is pretty great though.
Earth Power, Power Gem, Discharge even. Would actually be fairly fitting as Volbeat also dips into Electric moves.

That's just a regular coat (albeit it has a central corset piece) going full length, with a proper dress (poorly thought out to be the same color) coming out from it. Ontop the coat is a fur-trimmed capelet.

A capelet is a small cape. Sure, it covers you, but only your top. If you want something more warm, you could use a windbreaker or a sweater, even a jacket. A capelet is mainly used for adding aesthetics.

Looks better pose-wise. You might want to make his legs thinner, he's quite skinny and it looks like they're either baggy or too big. I assume that you're going to do more shading later once all the "base" edits are finished? Oh, and his gloves are dark grey. I'm still thinking about the expression. I made a few edits on my end, removing the weird dots on the head, fixing his neck so it looks thinner, and fixing the mouth cause sprites don't show teeth ingame, they use skin color as the mouth if the character isn't a woman with lipstick. You can just copy these edits onto whatever program you are using.

I think it's important that you establish a firm cutoff point for yourself, because you're doing a sweet thing for a very naughty OCD case, and you'll be bouncing back and forth for days if it were up to him.
As someone who's been spying on emails at work all day and has no stakes in this, make the legs slimmer to more accurately reflect a tailored outfit and find some way to better differentiate between the chin and neck. Maybe this is just my own "flexing Smoochum" moment but it's what my eyes lock onto every time I look.
Beyond that, I'd say you're golden.

How detailed do you want it?
Pokemon sprites aren't famous for their high color depth and extreme fidelity, but I can go very detailed, feathered shading, textures everything if you want.

Exactly one year ago today, before we even called this place Trainer OCs General, in the dead of night at 03:37:06 EST, the first thread was published. Half of the people seen in this thread didn't stick around after the first month and only half of the people who stuck around would go on to be active contributors.

I don't feel a lot anymore, but any time I think about this place's inception, this weird pattern comes into my head: exactly 11 days after the creation of /tog/ my birthday occurs, and 11 days after that, was the unveiling of Alex (with two days spent asking around planning). Thank you to Bibi (and anyone else I forgot about) for helping me out during that time and for sketching this (now outdated) design.

The odd speediness of this thread reminds me of those old days. I kind of miss them, I felt like I and the thread as a whole got more "engagement" back then. I'm not going to give you a cheesy "I never imagined" speech, but yeah, I never imagined that any these things would happen.

Is funny seeing that thread.
Having a small heart to heart here (spoilered for those who don't want feels):
December 2023 will go as the worst month in my life for me. For reasons that no longer matter, I lost my laptop, my phone, almost all of my money, and my mother got into legal problems for an issue she wasn't a part of. She was the fall person. It was a nightmare, and I needed a MASSIVE cheer up.
Seeing the thread, and seeing the people having a good time made me stop thinking about all the bad stuff that happened to my family after those 4 weeks, so I started to hype people around. Seeing what the thread has become makes me a bit proud, since we always welcome people to make great things.
In fact, part of why I made David was because I needed a hero, and you guys were my heroes. Thanks for sticking around.

Onto better things: I finally have a laptop after so long. Merry (late) Christmas to me! Who knows, maybe I'll write that David x Emily crossover story eventually.

Keep being awesome, guys.

After a very tense year for us with a lot of highs and a lot of lows, my hometown actually ended up scoring the lowest homicide rate it's seen in five years, with only 609 murders and 2,444 reported shot & wounded. We are on a downward trend and I expect nothing but good things to continue if the power grid makes it through the freezing January temperatures.

For the sake of staying on-topic, we're going to staple an addendum here to discuss some real street filth: the ever-expanding population of [Stunky] roaming the city.
In real life, skunks are omnivorous mesopredators; scavenging trash, eating plant matter, and preying on bugs, rodents, and nesting birds. Chicago's unique layered infrastructure surrounded by hundreds of miles of farmland and untamed wilderness provides a perfect beacon for infinite giant rats that feed skunks and cats that feed those goddamn coyotes.
Unlike skunks, Stunky has the unique benefit of being able to use its noxious spray offensively via Poison Gas, Acid Spray, and if trained or cross-bred, detonating their gases in fiery explosions. No need to waste energy digging through the earth to reach a Rattata nest if you just gas or burn them out and force your meals to come to you.
True to this observation, we can see Stunky's territory overlap with exactly the kind of prey you'd expect a mesopredator to indulge in (bonus points for Route 214 including fellow mesopredators Houndoom and Mightyena): Kricketot, primarily, but also mons like Wingull, Dedenne, Starly, Rookiedee, Pawmi, Applin, and Shroodle, to name a few.
The lattermost is almost tailor-made to be prey for Stunky, as Shroodle's foul-smelling territory displays rings a dinner bell for an undeterred Skunk Pokemon.

You’re planning a David/Emily interaction? Cool. I want to write more interactions myself (aside from more
chapters of my main story, of course) but I wouldn’t feel confident enough until I know the characters well enough for that. Emilyanon and Alexanon especially might be critical of how others write their characters (not that that’s a bad thing per se, I’m just saying they’d probably do that).

I'd be more shocked than anything because Archivist and MAYBE Silas are the only ones who really take interest in my work. I do care about accuracy but I try not to be "offensive" when I tell the person about it. I know Archivist told me that in Episode 5 Alex was holding back because he wanted to "gain info about Azelie" or something so really as long as you justify how Alex acted I don't think I should mind. Consult with me prior if you think you'll mess up.
