There was a Japanese TV drama in the early 90s called Night Brain that someone on the Pokemon staff must have been a fan of, since there are a lot of blatant homages to it in Pokemon Red and Green. The most obvious is Night Shade literally just being called "Night Brain" in Japanese.
There's also a crack theory among the Japanese that Mewtwo is named after a psychic character in the show, but it involves some very convoluted kanji wordplay to get from point A to point B. (although there's also a theory Sabrina was loosely based off the character in question, which is a lot more likely)
