But you're absolutely right. I would say that about most Pokemon games led by Ohmori desu. Waifus and appealing character designs are all well and good but it feels like that's ALL his games are about with the actual gameplay being there to push to player to more interactions with their waifu or whatever. Alola feels like a glorified Lillie escort mission for 20+ hours and it feels like Nemona is lurking around every corner watching your every move, paying off Penny to continually feed her information on your movements.
I miss when a dank adventure with my Pokebros was the preliminary focus of the games. They should add more features that allow you to interact with them now that the games are 3D. Petting, showering and feeding them is all well and good but I miss the days of shit like Contests, PokeAthlon and such. Non-battling ways to have fun with your bros.
