It's really just what

The Pokémon world is merely a reflection of our world - the developers' minds conjured up the Pokémon world through their imagination, yes, but their imagination comes from our world, it is a reflection of it. All the Pokémon creatures you love - they're based on real animals, real people, real myths... All the places in the Pokémon world you dream of visiting? Same thing - based upon real places. Pokémon is ultimately a love letter to our own world - let's not forget that Tajiri made the original games so that children could have a similar experience to his childhood of collecting bugs during the summer.
There are many wonderous things on Earth. There aren't any magical animals, but we do have lizards that walk on water, cockroaches that could survive a nuclear winter, undersea creatures that emit light... There are also a ton of interesting places, all with their unique folklore and mythology, with thousands of years of history.
Rather than asking yourself “this sucks, why can't it be Pokémon?”, ask yourself “what part of this inspired something I see in Pokémon?”
If there's something that the Teraleak has shown us, is that GF does legitimately take its real-world references seriously.
