Anyway when you look at gen 1 designs its clear they definitely looked at existing games so they could have 1 mon/line per videogame enemy trope, and then designed them in their own style. This is both for them to be familiar enough with kids/teens at the time and to reduce the need to come up with their own ideas. So its not like they directly stole from sonic/DQ/Etc but they definitely knew what they were doing and that's why there's always a 1 - 1 with other games.
