Vaporeon was the first Pokemon I had seen with 400+ HP. Of course, I was a kid at the time so I didn't know the potential of other Pokemon.
When I came back to Pokemon Go, Vaporeon was my strongest Pokemon, having near-perdect IVs. It carried me a long way, and I still use it in some Rocket grunt battles.
I don't know that it's my favorite, but Vaporeon is the one I have the most history with.

If you like Vaporeon because "it's a good design and the fins look neat" or "I had one in my first Pokemon game way back when, he was good and won a bunch of battles for me so he'll always be my bro", it's no more "furry" than liking anything else. The vaporeon copypasta is memorable because it was unexpected, while people suspected Game Freak had -at least- considered humans and pokémon mating because of all sorts of things since Gen4.
