It is easier than it has ever been to just trade for exclusives, even if you don't have friends or siblings with the alternate version like vast majority of the kids playing these games do.
We have the numbers from when they used to do third versions, even when given a different version with significant differences and enhancement a year or more later, less than half of people would typically go for it, sometimes much less than that. Getting a game and a better version was a tough enough ask already, there's a reason they stopped doing it, even when they made them basically a different game it did not translate into much more sales. There is an order of magnitude less people willing to buy two copies of almost exactly the same goddamn game for themselves.
