It is said that Shudo did not intend for Misty to come across as romantic, but she does anyways. She is constantly animated to be leaning on or sleeping on Ash. Normies come away from the show thinking they're a future couple to this day.
Ash was at least somewhat reactive when people suggested he liked Misty.
When Misty leaves she says "Finally Ash I know how you feel" (The english version adds "About me") And no matter how you shake it, that has romantic undertones. There's also the infamous scene of him staring down her dress.
Here is my complaint, come XY, for some reason they go ALL in on the "Shonen protagonist cannot comprehend love" trope on Ash. It's so fucking cliche and tired.
What was up with Giselle? Is she a special case? Do they just prefer that never happened?
Ash can practically understand animals and we're supposed to believe he has no perception at all to the obvious crush?
In the gen 1 magnemite episode, Ash already knows what a stalker is. In the Gligar episode, ASH is the one to get mad when he notices Brock is about to do his bit.
In Journeys, Ash sees through Misty pretending she doesn't want to hang out. When it ccomes to Serena they do their old Naruto bullshit where he can't see blazing headlights.
The Rudy episode is the only time before now that suggested that Ash is completely oblivious. In other instances like Macey hi simply did not care.
It actually feeds into the argument that XY Ash is OOC.
Kanto Ash would have not only caught on at some point but developed an ego about Serena that he would have had to learn to tone down.
