Not too surprised no one has said Gen 3 lol. If you like the more modern spritework you probably prefer 4 or 5, and it's not quite limited enough to be charming like Gen 2.

4. I can't stand Gen 5s long stick limbs, the overuse of 3D in the overworld and the tweening Pokémon sprites. They're good games, but I hate how they look.

Gen 5, the animations can be janky sometimes but I love how the sprites look
Special mention to Gen 6 for the reflections, route 120 at night in ORAS is especially beautiful

Gen 3 isn't bad, but it's very flat and samey.
There's no location in the gen 3 games which is really iconic or distinct.

Gen 2 is similar, but I think the lower fidelity of the system lets it get away with a lot more

I wouldn't say that, the falling ash route and desert definitely stand out as visually distinct from the rest of "light green grass route" that non-ocean hoenn mostly is. To me at least, the most iconic part is the underwater areas though, none of the other gens have something like that.

The ash route maybe but the desert is basically just a massive block of a single colour with no features or landmarks.

The geography of the region makes sense and they clearly put a lot of thought into how different biomes connect together, but the visual design of the world lets down that ambition by overlapping too much on tiles and pallets, IMO.

That's fair. I was judging it as distinct from the rest of the region, not distinct as a standalone map. Most routes fall back on that one grass tileset with relatively minor alterations, like the yellowish rocks near meteor falls or the taller grass around fortree.
