I just saved myself that issue by just not using any the new types until Game Freak had built up their skillbase and were able to code the games in such a way that they were able to mark moves as physical or special and ensure they ran off the correct attacking stat to calculate its damage potential.

Sometimes you just get boned because your type has no moves either. Physical mons pretty much live or die based on having EQ, Rock Slide or a good fighting move. If you don't have at least one of those three you are so fucked. And the distribution of that stuff was generally lower.

You’re thinking about the opposite case, being that Skarmory has good physical bulk and is only weak to 2 special moves, which case its common partners can just switch into Fire and Electric moves easily.
If Skarm had Roost (or recover) in Gen 3 or Phys/Special split never happened, it would legit be broken because there aren’t moves like Flare Blitz physical attackers can use.

The fact that its 2 weaknesses are on its bulkier side is a balancing factor. It’s why Skarm is usually top 2 of the ADV era, since it walls pretty much every physical attacker. That was until the Phys/Special split.
