They're like demons, some are dumb, some are far more intelligent than you. A Poké Ball is just a technological means of subjugation, you display your power through battle and make them submit through capture. Some will even join you on their own. They're all monsters, some just look like animals.

More like a yokai/spirit/mythological creature or concept personified (Victini could be a nuclear bomb reference with the A bomb project codenamed "Manhattan project" and Victini found in Pokémon Manhattan).
Lack of understanding about Japanese culture leads to lack of understanding of pokémon's presentation. They replace the animals, but they're not actually treated as pure animals, being more akin to myths, monsters and folklore creatures, if they actually existed for real.

Where did I say it wasn't? If anything, taking the "it's a nuclear bomb reference" as true (have no idea what leaks say about it), it's the cutest goddamn nuclear bomb I've ever seen and that's including the demon core memes where they give it a face.

I don't think a Magikarp is winning a Kindergarten Spelling Bee any time soon (or winning anything at all really), but the fact that your starter pops out of their ball right before the Leauge to basically talk to you in USUM tells me they're on average a lot smarter than you think, even if most non-Psychic types are probably not operating at full human capacity. Going into spin-off material PMD has them creating a functioning society around roughly Medieval level without any thumbs which is probably slightly above how they're actually depicted.

Pokemon vary in intelligence, the lowest is level is that of a trained seal, the highest is that of an all knowing god. However since it's a children's franchise they are not allowed to have Pokemon with an intelligence greater than humans.
