More then just that. They also have similar weight, normal and shiny colors, Ditto is found in the Pokémon Mansion, where Mewtwo was made as well as Cerulean Cave, where Mewtwo lives.

It's pretty clear that was the original intent and they backtracked on it because it was a kids game. Also it's not like they probably haven't forgot the original reasons why some Pokemon were even created in the first place, and Masuda saying that Pokemon are individual life forms despite creating Pokemon that very clearly interact with each other and always have is utter horseshit.

Its the area with the strongest Pokemon for him to test his strengths on, so that's where he went and took over the cave, because it wanted to prove itself. Then it just sort of settled there, rather than going off to find other places with stronger Pokemon.

The real question is why Mewtwo is still there in gen 2. Did Red catch it merely to challenge himself then relesse it back into the cave?

The original intent was to not even have Mew in the game.
Since it was added quickly and secretly at the very end of development after debugging was already finished, they probably just copypasted Ditto's data for Mew and made minor edits to avoid breaking the game.

Yeah, the similarities between Mew and Ditto that make sense in-universe were just happy coincidences. That theory is still cool as fuck and makes the Pokemon world in RBY feel more alive, and Masuda is a turbo-faggot if he pretends otherwise.

Ditto can also be found east of Fuchsia, which has nothing to do with Mewtwo/Mew.

And? Red is the character's ACTUAL name because Game Freak decided the MC's should be actual characters (blank slates though they may be) in their game world.
