>what does the game have that made it generally well received by older fans?1. More open world focused game, albeit segmented into parts. This is what fans wanted for the better part of Pokemon's lifespan.
2. The ability to engage with wild pokemon however you see fit. You can utilize stealth, stun them or engage with them in battle. Them also being to attack the player raises stakes and makes the encounter more engaging.
3. Been able to catch and use any pokemon without worrying about stats like IV/EVs or evolution methods like trading. Catching and training my own Gengar is more fulfilling than trading away to someone else. You can also choose to evolve pokemon at your own place, which is great for fans who want to play the game with their NFE favorites without needing evostones or pressing B over again.
It's genuinely a fun game. It's not perfect and completing the dex is a drag, but it's far more engaging than the prior games. People also like the focus on the traditional japanese aesthetic and the grandiose lore, but that's whatever.
