Who honestly cares about berry farming? Only time I ever hear about berry farming on /vp/, it's for the sake of content dick measuring and nothing else. Might as well play Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley or Rune Factory if you want a better farming sim.

How about My Pokémon Ranch, but with farming aspects stolen from Stardew Valley. It could even allow you to transfer the berries into the main series. Give it a really complex hybrid mechanic (like XY's but actually complicated).

Why? They can take that from Harvest Moon, which had all their games in Nintendo consoles since ever.
Harvest Moon for the SNES
Harvest Moon for the N64
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town for the GBA, with a second version for girls.
And now: Story of Seasons: Mineral Town, which is a remake from the N64 version.

They should just give dosh to Natsume and make that themselves. If it works, Pokémon may finally break a new spin off genre like Rangers or Mystery Dungeon.
At worst, it will die in that generation, like Battle Revolution.

I like it. XY added enough depth to it to spark interest and it kept it for a little while as everyone was discovering berry combinations the led to new mutations. I have my problems with XY, but this was a fun way to encourage people to play the game a little bit every day with decent rewards for committing to discovering every berry in the game. I wish they went further with it as a sidequest, though. If it ever comes back, maybe let the player discover and farm nature mints, too.

I thought people liked fluff content like this and even more so when there's an actual reward for it? Stuff like secret bases or contests never really served any purpose and people would still rather have them in the game than not

I wouldn't consider secret bases fluff when with online capabilities they can make grinding for good pokemon faster or let you larp as gym leaders. Contests should unironically have more depth to them and have smaller side stories associated with them.
Unrelated but I really hate how people seem to treat the Pokemon expirence as just battling now

I fucking love berries! I'm glad the leaks gave us English names for the e-reader berries we never got outside of Japan. Even if we'll never get these berries back so the names will never be used in an official capacity and romhacks that include them will probably just stick to the Japanese names out of familiarity, it just feels more complete. Especially with the overlap with gen 4's chilan berry, zukiho may not make its origin as immediately clear to a western audience as chilan but the fact that they did consider another name at least gives us something to call the e-reader chilan berry without ambiguity or having to go out of our way specify. If ever they were going to reintroduce these berries ORAS would've been the perfect time, they were remakes of the games that introduced the modern berries and the only games to feature the e-reader ones since they didn't make it to FRLG or Emerald, and it was during gen 6 which had the best berry farming mechanics.

I liked the mulch system from gen 4 but hated that there weren't any big central plots like the big ass berry farm in hoenn to go with. I also didn't really engage much with growing berries after that, all the rare berries were either way too much of a pain in the ass to get or way too easy to get for it to be worth it. I also liked whichever game had the berry pot key item, and the change in berry tree sprites from emerald to ORAS made me more upset than the battle frontier shit

I loved it in Gen III, thought it was a bit of a downgrade in Gen IV when you couldn't plant them from the side, nor did they drop and replant themselves and was mad that all my berry harvesting in Gen IV went to waste in V. My one main complaint about that gen, but I got over it. They could get away with a whole game based on berry farming.

I really would a contest-focussed side game or side series. But I guess when getting a game like that, it brings up the idea of other non-battle activities also getting their own side game/side series, which would be too much for them. Perhaps they could instead integrate multiple paths/play styles into the main games. Where you can choose if you want to do battles, contests or so on. To make it worth while to add these options, make it so that whatever you choose, other players who chose something else can still benefit from that. Like how a player farming berries would be helping a player doing contests.

I like battles, don't get me wrong, Pokemon imo has one of if not my favorite battle system but the "side content" makes the games feel more alive and appealing. I can still have a blast with gen 3 and 4 because of all the stuff to do.

The only side content in those games that sound interesting is the Battle Frontier. Secret Bases are cool but it loses a lot of appeal after the first few hours. Contests are a bore. Minigames from Platinum were ok I guess? I’m all for having more than battling as I’ve gotten all the stars on most Trainer Cards. Just think a lot of the alternatives are lame.
