mega evolutions were a franchise killing mistake
they enabled gamefreak's laziness by allowing them to get away with making minor ugly changes to old mons because fans lapped them up and called them good designs for no reason other than they looked similar to mons from the previous gens. this opened the door for paradox mons, regional variants, etc. which all enablegamefreak's laziness in a similar fashion to mega evolutions

You know you can make a team of new mons in every single pokemon games right? It was never that good but you have to admit, seeing Game Freak go to 3D with the mainline series was a big deal
There was a lot going on for XY's hype season
The new Fairy Type, Sylveon rumors, I think it was the last time Corocoro was still relevant for reveals, those guys who refused to leak Trevenant's trailer in that movie theater because apparently the last time someone did something similar they got arrested, Chespin/11, etc

I unironically enjoyed XY because of the low investment it required. Skating around Lumiose city or between cities was just, nice. Customising the trainer to be cute, was also good. It was the last Pokémon game that I'd put in more than 300 hours into. Compared to ORAS where I struggled past 13 on my initial play (I've since put it up to over 100), and Gen8 where I dropped the video games and only played for maybe 4 hours?
