gen 6 had such an emphasis on >KANTOOOO because that's really what the hype was all about: pokemon as a whole in 3D, rather than just the new new region per se.
back when gen 5 was current, I also liked to watch poketubers' wi-fi battles essentially showcasing the animated sprites and new hidden abilities and movepools and such that gen 5 gave to old mons.
despite old gen mons not being a emphasis in-game in gen 5, they secretly added a lot of content to them
