GF is never going to erase our savegame, nor our teams, it's counterproductive and frustrating for players.
So either the exchange has always taken place, because the data on what happened at Crystal Pool is deliberately incomplete, so that the player discovers the scene, making him understand that he has to go to a certain place (because there's a loop subtext).
Either that, or it didn't happen, creating a new timeline from our past. Because yes, time travel can create a new timeline from the same base if the laws of the Universe or the author for some reason don't allow the present/future to be altered or erased.
