But when written, especially on a computer without a German language option (my keyboard is set up to display the á, é, í, ó and ú used in my tongue for example), it can be acceptable. And given I never bothered to learn unicode either, seeing someone obviously not familiar with the language transposing ss for the correct symbol and accidentally making sense isn't that wildly wrong. Not proper grammar, but not altogether incorrect either.
