Why were tbe sprites more accurate to official artworks when compared to models?

He made it up. If you were to use a color picker and compared the colors, 90% of sprites would be closer to the original artworks compared to the models, which mostly have drained colors.

Salamence also went through a complete color change. It went from blue and orange to teal and orange to teal and red.

Also it's funny how the shiny stayed entirely consistent.
This sucks in Gengar's case cause now the shiny looks almost identical to the normal color, since Gengar has gotten more and more blue.

I agree, at least each 3D game has a different shader so they don't look exactly the same in every game either.

strangest part 'bout this, though, is that salamence had it's new/"proper" colours in colosseum, so it was definitely an old change.

..that, and gen 3 has this sort of psuedo-filter over some sprites, changing the colours and making them sorta "cloudy" feeling. nosepass is a good example of this.

I always assumed the differences between Gen 3 sprites and later was due to GBA color limitations.

I do miss when Gengar was properly dark and not pastel colored
