Agreed. Here in Japan, majority hated it initially but later grew to like it. These days it's hard to find a Japanese player who hates gen 5. There are forums that hate it but they hate it because a large chunk of the western fanbase does.

It sold better than every enhanced version, sequel and remake, including the aforementioned BDSP.

Speaking of enhanced versions, aren't those usually preferred over the first games?
Everyone prefers Emerald over Ruby/Sapphire or Platinum to Diamond/Pearl etc

The internet did have the power to influence me. It convinced me to not buy Black and White. A thing I regret because well, 1. The games are expensive af and they leave a gap in my collection because of it, and 2. I emulated them later on and actually really enjoyed it. Certainly a lot more than anything that came later bar the sequels.

Plus, Black and White sold quite well. 15 mil+ was pretty impressive for a game at tbe time.

Some Pokemon are coded to be less random than others, and in Gen 5 they began to code them to not be able to appear shiny.

I should clarify they're unable to appear shiny by NORMAL means, i.e. the legendary the game gives you in the story can't be shiny but if you have one by other means (event, trading) it still can be.

The real problem is that it was Game Boy Color exclusive and didn't work on the original GB or GB Pocket, even though Gold and Silver did. Out of the 120M total Game Boys sold, about 30M were Game Boy Colors. That already cuts the potential buyers by 75%.
Looking at it relatively, it didn't do too bad. A quick updated version that cost peanuts to make, but still was the best selling exclusive on the GBC, beating Mario DX and Zelda Oracles.

that's because they're basically the same game but more polished and with more content, BW1 is the only case where the "enhanced" version is different enough from the base game that both versions have their own identity, for example BW1 story and dex shine way more than BW2 imo
