Even the Yellow Rat itself is slowly phased out and reduced to quick nostalgia baits here and there. The design is simple, recognizable and it's functionality is literally as simple as throwing a rock or ball.
Could they change things around? Yeah sure, but I think it would be for worse. The Pokeball is way too widespread as branding and it just wekrs. It's like Apple removing Apple logo.
