After recent gens these guys feel the most like random people, there's no cohesion and the closest thing we have to characterization is Agatha's implied history with Oak. Literally who gives a shit about Bruno or Lance outside of fags?

They actually feel like people who should be on top of the world. Lorelei is the only odd one out, but she fits well enough, balancing out the cast with a young female. The progression as you get deeper into the elite four is pretty kino too.

Compare them to >>57350771 who look like paper pushers on bring your daughter to work day.

We literally know nothing about lorelei. Why is she using ice types? Is she supposed to be caluclated secretary type of person? FRLG tried to give her personality but collecting plushies is boring and doesn't synergize with her. It's just being a woman.

Bruno also is super boring. Lance at least tries to be cool and is part of secret legacy of dragon tamers which is interesting considering lore of Dratni bieng just discovered, so they probably kept dragons a secret.

Agatha is the only non boring one here. She's bitter, she has history with Oak, everyone suspects a romance and falling off because Oak was too autistic about his research. Her pussy is as dead as her Pokemon.

Something that seems to be completely lost on people is that sometimes, less is more. I think knowing nothing about Lorelei and Bruno makes them some of the more interesting Pokemon characters in the entire franchise. When you dedicate mountains of supplementary material to disecting and explaining the lore of every character, it kills the intruigue.

I think it's a combination of the NPCs actually hyping them up as big endgame threats, and the fact that each of them as individuals all *look* like they should be threats.

A cool confident onee-san, a big muscular dude who can't be assed to stand up, a scary old lady who talks shit about Professor Oak, and a Dragon Ball looking dude who uses actual dragons all carry the air of being strong Trainers, and it stands out.

iirc they all use the four rarest types in Gen 1, too, which makes their mons seem like the kind of thing the game hasn't prepared you for very much

I like them and Geeta. The Geeta hate is blown out of proportion because people don't understand she's not battling to defend a title but just as an academic evaluation. Other champions would lose their title so they have far greater urgency, but she is the top champion regardless of how many times she loses as she can keep losing over and over in her pursuit to establish more champions.

Normally a Trainer uses Pokémon that match their gender. In Gen II, Will is internally listed as a female Trainer and as such his Pokémon are female. His Gen II sprite color where his clothes and hair are red matches Lorelei, and he didn't have any known Sugimori artwork for at least a year. He has team overlap with Lorelei (Slowbro, Jynx), his position in the Elite Four matches Lorelei's, and his room is clearly themed after Ice. Combine that with Psychic being seen as the "weird" type, the mask, and Lorelei not receiving so much as a single mention or appearance in Gen II with no explanation, and some people started to wonder if Will actually USED to be Lorelei. But his dialogue implies a different backstory, and his Sugimori portrait used in Stadium in late 2000 and the his full art made for the TCG in 2001 give him a different hair color to his sprite (like how Karen appears blonde in the Gen II games but has blue hair in Stadium, the TCG, and HGSS). But it turns out that Karen's sprite was originally intended to be Lorelei's looking at Gen II development.
